About Take That Hill
Take That Hill is a hex-and-counter wargame that tasks you with commanding an infantry platoon to assault an enemy position on a distant hill within strict time limits using fire and maneuver tactics. It strips military wargaming down to its essentials with simple turn-based mechanics around suppression, morale, and action economy, making it an ideal introduction to the genre while offering advanced rules for depth once you master the basics.
A WARGAME PRIMER
Take That Hill is a hex-and-counter wargame primer: a short, focused introduction to the genre. It features a simple IGO-UGO turn structure that introduces the core mechanics used across the majority of commercial wargames: alternating sides, action economy, dice-driven fire, line of fire, suppression, morale and rally.LOW COMPLEXITY
The base game strips wargaming down to its essentials. Four sections, one enemy, one hill. Sixteen turns to take it. Combined turns plus hits reach 16 and the attack collapses. Reach the hill inside the first ten turns and it's a clean victory; from turn eleven the best you can hope for is a draw.ADVANCED RULES
- Fire support: Rifle Platoon, GPMG section, 81mm High Explosive, 81mm Smoke. Each is a one-shot asset; spent at the right moment or wasted.
- Red defences: Hidden minefields, barbed wire, depth positions that may or may not be real, and 120mm mortars with a beaten zone that chains hex to hex.
- Hit markers and morale: Direct and indirect hits stack penalties on rally rolls. Take both and the penalties double.
- Low light: Pre-dawn attacks penalise fire and rally by -2 until illumination arrives. Blue pre-arranges a flare; Red can call their own.

A well-made & polished digital adaptation of a learning primer. One that severely lacks content & has a limited scope due to the reuse of a solitary, tiny map & a fixed scale of a few units. The experience is very repetitive, even with the optional battlefield parameters that attempt to liven up gameplay. While automating these takes away a large slice of tactical influence from what should be at the players disposal. Its biggest issues are that the features adapted from the original version have not been added to, to resemble anything like a digital wargame. While core mechanics rely on RNG from die rolls against too high target thresholds, that play out as too many failed rallying attempts. Which when combined with overwhelming suppression fire almost ensures defeat against a tight turn-limit. In my opinion this is a niche title, with little to offer most wargamers. Not enjoyable…13 found this helpful
After spending an hour with Take That Hill, I came away with mixed feelings. As a digital adaptation of the tabletop game, it succeeds remarkably well at its original mission: "a simplified primer to teach core wargaming mechanics and infantry tactics without long, complicated rulebooks." The game introduces concepts such as fire and maneuver, suppression, morale, rallying, and alternating-turn tactical decision-making in a way that is approachable, well-presented, and easy to understand. The integrated Field Manual, clean interface, and gradual tutorials make it an excellent educational tool for anyone curious about the fundamentals of tabletop hex-and-counter wargames. Unfortunately, that same commitment to faithfully recreating the tabletop experience also becomes the game's greatest weakness. Nearly every significant action—attacking, suppressing, and rallying—is resolved through simple D6 dice rolls. While randomness has always been a defining characteristic of tabletop wargames, the digital adaptation rarely leverages the computer as a platform to improve or expand upon those mechanics. Instead, it reproduces one of tabletop gaming's biggest limitations: pivotal tactical de…9 found this helpful
faithful to the tabletop game is advantage, but the original game is nearly a solo game, so why we spend so much dollars to buy a digital version? we play on the table by ourselves, ok? so for the devs, i hope you can give a little extension, not to change the rule, but give more maps, more enemies' possibility, so be distinguish to the original game. ie give two, three enemies, or more terrain types. or give more cut off, and i'll buy it again.4 found this helpful
Take That Hill is an incredibly short game with seemingly only two maps to play. The game system plays something like a boardgame, and revolves around moving your troops from left to right to take a hill or objective. Once you take the objective, you evacuate. You have some basic choices such as applying fire to freeze the enemy or moving. The rest of the game system is pretty much automated. Troops have to rally after each action. They get a bonus if they're with the platoon HQ. You can choose targets but there is rarely more than one to select. It's mostly a game of cover and fire. There we no particular bugs. The game performs well enough. There is no story, no campaign, or resource management. You just... take the hill. Unfortunately there are large numbers of other hex based games, particularly in similar genres, that you could investigate and play for the price point. I would strongly recommend the developers consider adding a dozen or so scenarios, even as an intended primer, if it's designed as an introduction hex based war gaming. The bones are there, but there just isn't enough gameplay.3 found this helpful
