Sometimes you find a rare gem you can tell a solo indie dev put a lot into. Tales of Wakana is not a perfect game, but it's pretty damn good. Over guise of a light-hearted silly story, it's clear the game does not take itself seriously at all in terms of plot, but underneath is a pretty meaty game with a lot to see and do. Clocking in at 21 hours, I played the entire game on hard mode and ended up going for 100% achievements, a great value for the asking price of only around $10. While having the metroidvania tag on Steam, it is not a traditional metroidvania in the classical sense. By the end of the first 6 out of it's 14 main stages, you will have unlocked all of the movement progression abilities found in other games. What remains is a decent platformer with some pretty crazy boss fights, and there's a lot of them. There is some other combat progression here. You can upgrade your weapon by finding gems, a talent tree with passive stat boosts and new spells, and each of those spells can be leveled up in the main town by spending cash. Just starting it again (after loving the demo). So far it's not disappointing me at all. A really fun metroidvania with tons of style and a bizarre sense of humor that makes it incredibly endearing to me. Love the sound effects too; they give me 80s arcade nostalgia.
