The Artful Escape

The Artful Escape possesses markers of brilliance, yet the execution holds it back from excellent. It prioritizes emotionally resonant presentation over the integration of mechanics and narration. Your playable protagonist, Francis, supposedly shreds like he's from out of this world. I'm not saying the guitar playing needed to be more difficult but I am saying the virtuoso idea should have expressed differentiation. During the platforming sections of the game, Left Shift allows you to riff. That makes sense for simplicity's sake. Your guitar wails as you jump and pose dramatically. This is fine cohesion. But for bosses, where you essentially have a bit of a battle of the bands moment, you get visual mimicry instead of musical performance. This is narratively dissonant. At first it makes sense to monkey see, monkey do. But as Francis comes into his own, it should have featured the harmony of their blended talents thereby making the music collaborative. Giving the boss sections something cumulative to show growth and development while keeping it accessible would have made gameplay feel meaningful and connected to the story instead of feeling like all it's meant to do is confirm we a…

visually beautiful. (though personally I found it mostly odd, and that's probably the point) story = character growth only happens to the main character, otherwise the rest don't change or learn anything. the points of contention were glossed over. gameplay = it's a walking simulator whilst holding shift to 'play' a guitar, and some added kids simon says functionality. you know that kids game where the green light turns on, so you press the green light. then the green light and the blue light turn on and you press the green, then the blue? yea. that game. at first, i was awed by aesthetics but this game lacks soul and depth, so I was bored quickly on. i like rpg's and 'story-rich' games, but this one was definitely not for me. if you want to hold right to walk, and shift to shred sporadically and space for jump a few times, and have the game play itself, then this is the game for you.

this game is so absurd and at times, absolutely ridiculous but yet so funny! the gameplay mechanics definitely need some editing, as they're very repetitive and at times you're just standing still waiting or just moving left and right jumping around. but it's really fun, and i like the message its portraying. 6/10

This Game is an artistic masterpeice. The plot is completely unpredictable from start to finish and the art is absolutely gorgeous. My only negative is the gameplay is very simple, feels more like an interactive movie with the occasional simon says match. That being said, its an experience Id play again despite its simplicity in gamplay because it makes up for it in its complexity in plot and artistry. A warning for the visuals though, without spoilers. I'd recommend playing sober unless you can handle a LOT of colour and absract designs.

My parents warned me about ego trips and drugs, but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that was great. Beautiful, addictive, and yes, I want more.
