This is by far the worst of the 3. You can tell the Director of the first to was not really involved with this title. Humor and overall game play are pretty boring causing many of this to be long winded. While not as fun it is worth a shot if you liked the first 2 so get it on sale if anything.1 found this helpful
TL;DR: If you want more DeathSpank and can put up with much higher difficulty and a less interesting world, this game is for you. This is more of a mid-recommendation than a full one, details follow. The Baconing is the third game in the DeathSpank series and the only one not involving the original creative director Ron Gilbert (who also famously created Monkey Island). The previous 2 entries were light-hearted comedy action RPGs with a unique setting combining anachronistic elements, acerbic humour and a solid (if repetitive) gameplay formula. The fun loop from the previous games consisted of a crazily over-the-top bumbling fool of a main character (DeathSpank) who quests to help people (sometimes unwittingly doing the contrary) while chasing ridiculous Macguffins. Gear would drop from enemies as you explore the world where new themed locations would regularly come up to advance the plot. The latter was simple but fun and the first game especially nailed the addictive just one more quest gameplay. The second game was harder and had a bloated number of sidequests but still fun while completing the original plot with multiple endings. Over a decade since my last play through and it's still one of the funniest games I've ever played. Steam version is a little janky and crash prone. But that's just cause you can only sustain so much silliness. Deathspank himself probably coded it, anyways.
The Baconing is a solid but slightly disappointing conclusion to the DeathSpank trilogy — the humor and voice acting are still genuinely funny, and the colorful art style holds up, but without Ron Gilbert at the helm the wit feels a step below the first two games. The hack-and-slash combat gets frustrating fast, especially with offscreen ranged enemies pelting you with homing projectiles on top of a cooldown-heavy shield system that punishes any lapse in timing. That said, I clocked around 8-9 hours doing everything, which felt fair for the price, and the variety of environments kept things from going completely stale. If you've played and enjoyed the first two games, it's worth finishing the trilogy — just go in with tempered expectations and back up your saves often.
