The Book of Regrets

[h1]Enjoyable & well-made - a true hidden gem of a game![/h1] If you like [i]Choose Your Own Adventure[/i] books/games, you [i]must[/i] try this one. There is a choice to be made on every screen, and those choices can lead to vastly different outcomes and yield vastly different storylines. To get the full experience (and to understand the real story), multiple playthroughs are needed. However, each playthrough is never tedious, because you discover new things and start to figure stuff out. It took me around 4-5 hours to get most of the endings, including the "true" ending of the game (which was pretty ingenious btw). Despite the simple-looking interface, the game does a pretty great job of immersing you in the environment it creates through good writing, smooth narration, nicely-done character artwork, and, for the most part, convincing voice acting (aside from the little girl's fake screams, everyone else was excellent, especially the game's developer himself, Michael Pulis, as the Cloaked Man). If you're looking for a short little adventure game to play, The Book of Regrets is a good pick. It plays like a visual novel but with a little more interaction. These interactions could be cleaned up and explored more but I still found them refreshing. The visuals are pretty good but could be polished a little more. Same goes for the story. While I enjoyed playing it and feel that the game is fair for its price, the story felt a little unfulfilling. I left the game still wondering why I was there to begin with? And maybe that is the point, is that there was no point but to survive and find a way out. Definitely an interesting game. I believe there are a few different outcomes- I only found one but realized there were some things I was not able to achieve. I like that there are options and it can play out differently. Not a bad hidden gem. I definitely enjoyed myself figuring out each ending. The story of the game is pretty good, and I loved the various endings. The price tag isn't too bad, considering the kind of game you're getting. There were some slight bugs I noticed in the game, but they didn't appear that often and usually only if I was spamming the space button too quickly in certain areas. The fight scene in the end was a bit annoying, although it does add a bit something else to the gameplay. The puzzles in-game are way too easy, so if you're looking for hard puzzles, you won't find them in this game. However, the bulk of the game was figuring out what choices you should/shouldn't make, so the puzzles weren't much focus anyway (I think there are only 2 puzzles in-game). Overall: I definitely recommend trying out this game!
