The Calamity Trials

The Calamity Trials is a game that caught me off guard because it takes the idea of first person parkour and mixes it with horror in a pretty unusual way. The story starts with me being locked into a chair after choosing these trials instead of a death sentence, and I am then forced to enter a strange world through a screen. From there, I have to complete increasingly difficult parkour stages while something called IT chases me. I liked the strange setup because it gives the whole game an unsettling feeling before I even start worrying about the actual obstacles. The parkour is easily the main reason I enjoyed it. Each stage is built around reaching the light at the end while avoiding the void and staying ahead of IT. I have to jump across platforms, move quickly through obstacles and learn the layout through repeated attempts. The speed is what makes it satisfying when I finally get a difficult section right. A failed jump can send me back to the beginning, so learning the course and becoming more consistent is a big part of the experience. The weapons are a particularly interesting part of the design.
