It holds itself to high standards of writing and visual style while unfolding an epic tale. The sheer amount of quality content makes it an undeniable bargain. [b]Critical Review:[/b] The scope and depth of the VN serves as both its greatest strength and stumbling block. The amount of ground it covers is more akin to a fantasy epic spanning multiple books than the content for a single VN, and the level of depth it explores it in is similar to more elaborate fantasy. To fit in even a longer-than-average VN something has to give, and in this case it is the constancy of the narrative resolution that does. The Hayseed Knight aggressively prioritizes the exploration of specific scenes, interactions, and impressions. This makes much of the rest of the novel, still done to a high standard, feel glossed in comparison. The Hayseed Knight is a fantasy visual novel that succeeds through personality, emotional storytelling, and an incredible amount of charm packed into every scene. What initially appears to be a lighthearted adventure about a clumsy farm boy pursuing knighthood gradually reveals itself as a surprisingly heartfelt and emotionally layered journey filled with memorable characters, clever humor, and touching moments of vulnerability. The game embraces classic fantasy themes while presenting them through an unconventional lens, creating an experience that feels refreshing, sincere, and deeply personal from beginning to end. The story centers around Ader, a poor one-eyed villager with dreams far larger than his circumstances. He is not portrayed as a fearless chosen hero destined for greatness, but rather as someone struggling with insecurity, bad luck, and constant self-doubt. This makes him immediately relatable and easy to root for. His determination to become a knight despite overwhelming obstacles forms the emotional backbone of the narrative. This is maybe the most charming thing I've played ... ever? As others have pointed out, this is more of a visual novel, and I have to admit that I went into it still thinking there would be lots of "choose your own adventure" sorts of plot splits. It's more limited in terms of player choice than I'd hoped ... but the art, story, lore, music, and most of the voice acting is just all so lovingly crafted, I can't do anything other than recommend this.

Arguably, the best visual novel almost nobody has played. Clearly a labour of love and it took forever to make. It's cute, it's queer, it'll make you feel things, bad and good, and it lives up to it's inspirations. To love, is to be changed. Highly recommended for anyone willing to have a good romp!

It's been a while since I've played this game, but I need to write a review because it's just so damn charming. I originally played the demo on itch.io when I was in school, and I fell in love with the characters and the worldbuilding (Which did change a bit if I recall, but it was for the better!) I look forward to seeing where this project goes in the future, but even now it's totally worth picking up!
