this game has potential (i think) but i cant play it right off the bat because the japanese keyboard you are presented with makes no sense and takes so much time just to find the letters (characters) the way they are laid out... why not just use the english QWERTY keyboard and map the romaji to the hiragana/katakana like a normal apple keyboard does? or even use the japanese keyboard... bummer.

would not recommend this game. it crashes and sets back all your progress. also somethings in the game are just incorrect example: the word business is set as katakana word but it's a hiragana word. the audio is sometimes robotic the game is buggy, some words you try to click on to see the meaning and nothing will happen. it's not developed properly, the pacing is painfully slow. also if you are brand new to Japanese this game would be to difficult for you because some words are not even explained just said and you have to spell them out guessing. the pronunciation is also off and frankly it needs more of a native touch. i see potential in the game but it's not worth the money. i paid 25 for it on a sale and I'm requesting a refund. in it's current state with it crashing its not playable anyways. good luck to the developer but this isn't worth my time or my money as it is.

Honestly bought this because it looked like old-school Dragon Quest and I’m an absolute sucker this kind of game. I wasn’t really expecting much from the language mechanics (I already know a bit of Japanese), but the spaced repetition battles actually force you to remember the vocabulary without being annoying. I completely skipped the kana intro since I already know hiragana, which was a really nice quality-of-life option to have. The story is a bit cliché, but the NPCs are surprisingly charming. It’s definitely a solid time sink that makes you feel productive while gaming.

Plays great on the Steam Deck, which makes it super cozy to just grind out some vocab before bed. I came into this knowing zero Japanese, and the dedicated Kana module at the start did a pretty good job easing me in. My only minor gripe is that the default combat multiplier can make some of the review fights drag on a bit too long. It took me some time before noticing you can bring it down. Still, getting to play mini-games like crosswords to break up the grammar lessons keeps it from feeling like actual schoolwork. Definitely worth the price if you want a chill, low-pressure way to start learning. Note: I am not a complete beginner, I have been learning Japanese on my own for a couple of month

I've been stuck in tutorial hell with Genki textbooks for months, so picking this game up was a massive breath of fresh air. Setting it to the N5 difficulty gave me a real confidence boost because it throws practical scenarios at you, like shopping or booking a hotel. The in-game dictionary and furigana support are absolute lifesavers when I completely blank out on a kanji during dialogue. Sometimes the speech recognition feature is a bit finicky if your mic isn't great, but you can mostly just use the on-screen keyboard to attack anyway. It totally beats mindlessly swiping on flashcard apps on my phone during my commute

The "one-size-fits-all" approach that Wanderlang uses for every language simply doesn't work well for Japanese.
