A great, but samey, soundtrack paired with a not as great, but samey, gameplay. Trasher is obviously trying to get you into a solid flow state, but the over the top player speed, repetitiveness and short level structure just felt a grind.

i can't say this is really what i was expecting or even wanting out of a Thumper followup, and the decision to release this game under a different studio name echoes the sentiment that a rock band is its core members--Puddle is not Drool, because even though Brian Gibson is in both, this is a different team making a different type of game. rather than "rhythm violence," the team has settled on simply a "violence" game, abstracted beyond recognition save for a few symbols that point towards the wider feelings the game instills in the player what interests me most about that read is that each level feels more like a puzzle rather than an attack of some kind. it was only at the end that it felt like the game was really fighting me. so, maybe it's the wrong read, and instead this is just a very abstract and violent-feeling puzzle game that requires precise aim and timing but this is another one of those times when i really wish steam would let me leave a "mixed" review, because on the whole i feel like i *can* recommend this game for its atmosphere and soundscape, but not its actual gameplay. i love listening to the game, and i love looking at the game, but feeling the game is often …

The gameplay feels like fruit ninja with power abilities with different obstacles. I find the art direction unique and similar to Thumper. I wouldn't call it a rhythm game where you hit notes on the beat, but following the flow of the music within the gameplay. I find the gameplay easier with mouse than it is for VR and Controller, even though the game is made with VR in mind for more immersion. There is a time mode (complete as fast as you can) and + mode (higher difficulty, more precision), which I find playing with a mouse is beneficial for accuracy when doing + mode. The music and theme for each world is distinctive enough to where it feels like a different experience from the previous world along with learning new tech mechanics for each new approaching world. Overall, I like the new feel of a wavy hypnotic flow from the Thumper game.

Thrasher is a rhythm and survival game where you fight lovecraftian bosses in an abstract and surreal world. You can play it with mouse and keyboard, with a controller, or in virtual reality. I played it in VR and I consider it the best way to experience it thanks to its incredible visuals, but it’s also very fun and challenging with the other control methods. You take control of a space eel in extradimensional, abstract levels. Using a pointer, you guide its movement across the screen—preferably with circular motions—with the goal of feeding it lines of light, avoiding obstacles, and defeating bosses. The gameplay feels like a mix between a rhythm game, Fruit Ninja, Metal Gear Solid: Revengeance, Beat Saber, and Osu. You must trace the correct path to execute attacks or cuts at the precise moments, passing through the right lines and avoiding obstacles and enemies with millimetric precision. There are 9 areas, each with 10 zones and a three-phase boss fight. The pace of the game is fast and intense, since the levels are time-based.
