About Tomba! Special Edition

Tomba! returns in Tomba! Special Edition, the ultimate version of the legendary platforming masterpiece.

As the titular Tomba, you leap, bite, and throw your way across stunning 2.5D landscapes on a quest to overcome a deplorable cadre of nefarious pigs. Along the way, you’ll explore ancient relics, discover fascinating characters, unlock thrilling quests, and unearth hidden treasures. It’s a platforming adventure that perfectly fuses linear and nonlinear gameplay styles.

Tomba! was first published in 1997, and is back today in a vastly-expanded special edition packed with quality of life improvements, including:
  • Save Anywhere! No more worrying about heading back to a checkpoint.
  • Rewind - Stuck on a difficult challenge? Try again!
  • Toggle for analog control
  • A museum crammed with classic print advertisements, original packaging and manuals, never- before-seen dev documents, and high-res original artwork
  • A new remastered soundtrack from original Composer Harumi Fujita (who also composed Ghosts 'n Goblins, Mega Man 3, Bionic Commando, and more!)
  • Interview with Tomba!'s legendary creator, Tokuro Fujiwara (famous for Ghosts 'n Goblins, Resident Evil, Mega Man X, and more!)

Legendary classic from my childhood given new life on Steam packed with a bunch of useful new features! This is a wonderful little platformer with all sorts of awesome stuff going on. I used to boot this up on an emulator from time to time but now I don't have to. <3

this port has a terrible sound bug that hasnt been fixed and probably won't at this point. nearly everytime you enter a new zone a weird continuous note will play along the music, sometimes its a high pitched one that makes playing the game without fully muting it or disabling sound impossible. i really cant reccommend it until they fix this specific bug

Very fun retro game. The addition of the "rewind" mechanic in this game is awesome, and made it so much less frustrating to play than the original, which I didn't actually finish, with the wonky jumping physics.

A classic oddball platformer/RPG hybrid in a world full of secrets that rewards exploration and experimentation. The port is in a much better place than when it launched, but the price when not on sale is a little steep. A great game at its core and a great way to play if you're a newcomer or one of the many who played the demo but never the full release. By the same token, the Special Edition release doesn't offer enough extra to make it worthwhile if you already have the PlayStation version or prefer to play on an emulator. Tomba is aight. I give it a lot of credit for originality and creativity. The game is colorful, energetic, and unashamedly weird. Definitely lots of elements to appreciate. However, Tomba is also a surprisingly frustrating experience. You pretty much need a guide and the Special Edition features (thank god for rewind) to make the meat and potatoes fun. I was honestly baffled after around the 5-hour mark by just how little guidance there was. The thought kept occurring to me that any kid drawn to this title for its vibrant colors and "Saturday Morning Cartoon"-esque artwork would quickly get stuck and quit. There's a lot of that NES era esotericism going on here. For example: near the end of the game, there's a moment where you have to "find 7 friends" to progress. I assumed this would be backtracking to call upon important characters interacted with throughout the game. But no, it is just random NPCs for the most part. If I hadn't looked it up, I would have had to talk to literally every NPC in the game in order to find the right ones by process of elimination. Oh, and the 7th 'friend' is something from your inventory. You're just supposed to know to stop looking when you've foun…

One of my favourite games of all time. I don't even know how to describe it succinctly. Platformer Adventure? Yeah, that probably works. Its just fun.
