The gameplay gets old pretty quickly. Each level requires you to enter the elevator for the next floor -- sometimes you'll need to collect a spaceship part before doing so, but there was never anything dramatic about it. The enemies' only means of hurting is often to chase you, so while a lot of enemies look different, almost all of them act the same. Throughout these runs, you can grab power-ups, but unlike other roguelikes/lites, they only last about a minute.
Developed and published by HumaNature Studios, ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove! successfully revives one of gaming's most beloved cult franchises by blending the charm of its 16-bit origins with modern roguelike mechanics and cooperative gameplay. Rather than reinventing the formula, the game embraces the quirky personality that made the original memorable, delivering an adventure filled with humor, unpredictability, and an unmistakable sense of style. Players once again control the iconic alien duo, ToeJam and Earl, after their spaceship crashes on Earth, forcing them to recover the scattered pieces of their Rapmaster Rocket while navigating bizarre floating islands populated by eccentric humans and strange hazards. The gameplay centers on exploration instead of direct combat, creating an experience that rewards curiosity and experimentation. Every stage is procedurally generated, ensuring that no two journeys are identical. Players search for hidden rocket parts, collect presents with mysterious effects, rescue fellow aliens, and avoid or outsmart a colorful cast of Earthlings. The presents remain one of the game's defining mechanics, as they can contain anything from valuable…
I've not played much of this remake but I most certainly played the original on the Sega Mega Drive to absolute death! Control are a bit of a pain but fun still.
just discovered the OG version and this remake version in 2026. it is fun !
The original is still King Toejam and Earl are products of the era they were made in. Very early 90s where everything was hip and cool. The gameplay was a very unique co-op game. Two Aliens crash their ship on earth and are looking for the pieces find them all and you beat the game. You go up on elevators looking for pieces in areas running into friendly and unfriendly humans. It was a very silly game that dosen't take itself to seriously. Back in the groovve is a reboot/remake of sorts and I'm not impressed Toejam and Earl's personalities are completly flipped Earl (Big Earl) was chill laid back in the og not Patrick Star dumb, Toejam was brash, and hip now he's a selfish narccissist. They're personalities complemented how they played Earl was slow but had more health, Toejam was Faster but was more fragile. I did not like the updated graphics the mix between 2D and 3D backgrounds is not pleasing to me, I played as Earl and he moves slower than I remember, enemies are way more persistant and the appearing ground to other islands now you have to be very near the edge for it to emerge. Presents are more prevalant in the reramke. In the og they were mysteries until you opened them…
I played this on the Sega Genesis with my brother back when we were tiny! I LOVE this game, it's my childhood! Sometimes I ragequit when I get kicked off of a few levels in a row but it's still loads of fun!
