About Tome of the Damned
Become the Nightmare of All Humanity
Tome of the Damned is a dark and gripping top-down roguelike that tells the tragic story of a mage whose reckless experiments with forbidden magic ended in disaster. Once a powerful sorcerer, you are now a living corpse doomed to endless cycles of reincarnation, inhabiting the bodies of the dead. Your lair lies deep within the castle’s dungeons, surrounded by former allies and castle guards who are determined to keep you locked away to prevent your dark magic from escaping.Your journey begins in the deepest, darkest corners of the castle. Step by step, you fight your way toward freedom, facing increasingly powerful foes-seasoned warriors, cunning mages, and relentless guards willing to give their lives to stop you.Along the way, you discover ancient altars that serve as sources of power.
These altars allow you to enhance your weapons, unlock powerful spells, and improve your attributes, offering countless paths to develop your abilities and adapt to the trials ahead.Choose one of five enchanted weapons and one of four magical grimoires, then grind your enemies to dust. But don’t worry if you happen to die. After all, you still have plenty of bodies left-you can simply take a new one. What Steam players say
Recent verbatim reviews from Steam — separate from playze.io community reviews below.
Players praise the game's engaging gameplay, excellent optimization, and stable performance across platforms, with the roguelike combat and atmosphere drawing comparisons to Hades. However, multiple players report significant control issues including unresponsive controller inputs and unusable keyboard mapping, along with poor visual design where red health bars blend into red backgrounds and directional attacks frequently miss or fire in wrong directions, making the game difficult to play in its current state.
The game turned out to be very engaging. The optimization is top-notch — it could probably run on a cardboard box. I get a stable 60 FPS on both Steam Deck and PC. Recommended.6 found this helpful
The controls on this game are just awful. The right trigger on my XBox controller isn't registering at all, and the keyboard controls are basically unusable. There is no way to remap controls, so this is basically a non-starter for me. On top of that, character health bars are small, canted at weird diagonals and red against a mostly red background. Half the time I couldn't even tell if I was dealing damage. Refund requested. Edited to add: Controller is a PowerA Spectra Enhanced XBox controller. It's functioning just fine in other games and when tested with joy.cpl5 found this helpful
Refund requested. Controls are a mess and the color scheme is terrible for being able to see what is going on onscreen. More often than not your attacks completely miss the enemy and attack in the opposite direction of the enemy on screen. There may be something here but not in its current state.3 found this helpful
