Tower Bombarde takes the defensive idea from Brain Storm and turns it into a much more focused action game. Instead of attacking enemies directly, I have to survive against walls of turrets and use their own attacks against them. I really liked that twist because it makes the combat feel more like a positioning puzzle than a standard shooter. The basic mechanic is wonderfully simple. I move around the arena, avoid incoming shots and try to position enemies so their attacks destroy other turrets. This sounds easy at first, but it becomes much more satisfying when the number of hazards increases and I have to think several moves ahead. I enjoyed learning how to manipulate enemy fire instead of relying on a traditional weapon. The different turret types help keep the encounters interesting. Each new combination can change how I approach an area because I cannot simply use the same movement pattern against everything. Boss encounters also give the game some stronger moments, especially when I need to understand the layout and use the surrounding threats to my advantage. Awesome game. Mechanics are smooth and intuitive, graphics are awesome, and gameplay is challenging and fun. The difficulty is really high, but so far it's not punishingly so. There's also a ton of content, which is always good. It's a shame a game this good is hidden so deep. Definitely check it out if you're into arcade games.
