Surviving in the Middle Ages demands a diverse skill set. Master the arts of Farming, Herbalism, Cooking, Husbandry, Carpentry, and Tailoring as you engage in the myriad tasks of a medieval peasant's life. From plowing fields to shearing sheep, there's always work to be done, though the season and the changing value of goods will keep you on your toes.

While you focus on your family, the village thrives around you. Forge friendships, pursue romance, and interact with your neighbours. But beware, as rival families vie for elections and jury seats. Consider forging alliances to collectively prosper.

Life as a peasant extends beyond the fields. Enhance your cottage and garden with handcrafted furniture that can elevate the value of your goods, whether for personal use or lucrative market sales. If space becomes a constraint, negotiate with your Lord for a larger cottage or garden to accommodate more furniture.

Farming entails more than just crops—farm animals provide vital resources. Purchase and breed cows, horses, goats, sheep, pigs, and chickens, each with their own unique needs and benefits. Opt for the strength of an ox or the speed of a horse, or reap the rewards of wool from sheep and the fertiliser from pigs.

Revive the age-old Hallmote tradition—an annual gathering of villagers to address legal disputes and elect local officials. Dive into the realm of politics, with rewards for winning elections and voting for allies. Your male family members might also be summoned for jury duty during village disputes.

Negotiate your feudal dues and responsibilities with your Lord. From farmland to meadowland, your home to your garden, all aspects of your life are open to negotiation. As a serf, you'll toil on your Lord's demesne or face fees, but earning their respect could pave your path to freedom. Rise to a freeman status and expand your rights, from baking your own bread to hunting in the forests. Under The Yoke intricately replicates the medieval rights system.

I really want to love this game. Sadly, I can't in good faith recommend it. The game is out for quite a bit but it feels like a bug ridden, unbalanced, early-access title. The last thing that happened to me and the reason why I decided to leave a review is this: - I went to the town to buy stuff from the market - While at it, I bought some animals - I noticed that when you buy animals, you can actually go in debt if don't have enough money (it's not possible to do the same with the normal goods). I did just that - I went back to the normal shop. Since I was in the negative and couldn't buy anything, the interface changed to include the 'too expensive' button and the 'exit from the shop' button dissapeared. And yep-- I soft locked myself in that interface - Reloaded the game, and checked autosave. It was from the start of the month. Didn't bother restarting. And again, this is just the last one that I encountered.

Idea is great. Overall, experience is also great. Too bad that bigger studios do not see the potential of games like this being developed as larger projects. Had great time playing this and Saelig. I recommend it!

First of all, I genuinely like Under the Yoke. I have played almost 22 hours so far, and I would rate it around 7.5/10 in its current state. The core idea is excellent. A medieval peasant-life simulator, focused not on kings, knights or grand strategy, but on ordinary people trying to survive under social and economic pressure, is genuinely interesting. The art style also has a lot of charm, and the atmosphere is one of the game’s strongest points. On a personal level, the subject matter makes the game even more engaging for me. My ancestors lived in a country where serfdom existed until relatively recently — 1861 in the Russian Empire. Although my own ancestors were free peasants, partly because Ukrainian lands often had a somewhat different and less fully serf-bound social history, this background makes the theme feel especially meaningful. I also lived in England for a year in 2022 after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, so playing a game about medieval English rural life has an extra layer of interest for me. I love history, medieval studies and computer games, and Under the Yoke sits right at the intersection of those interests. That said, the game really needs a qua…

While I think there is definitely still things that could be done to improve the game, mostly things like inventory management, character needs management, and providing more explanation of skills and how to improve them. This game has been so much fun! This is the exact sort of game I've been wanting to play and is so much fun! With some more balancing I expect Under The Yoke to only get better! The main improvements I can think of would be the ability to set aside an amount of crops that can be eaten like oats/legumes or baked like rye for replanting after you harvest them, preventing accidentally baking more of your rye into bread than you meant too and now you don't have enough to replant. Or despite having other vegetables your characters eat all of the legumes before replanting season and you can't afford to buy enough to fully plant the field.

Cool idea for a game, but the UI and gameplay is confusing, and just not fun. Needs more work to explain how and why the mechanics work the way they do, and to reward the player so that it's actually fun and engaging.
