About Wacky Wheels

Play as eight wacky animals in Wacky Wheels. Each animal has its own colorful antics and animations, including a tiger, elephant, raccoon, panda, shark, and more. These animals are incredibly competitive - they hate to lose! They take great joy in bumping, scraping and knocking you off the track. They want you at the back of the pack!

Nothing beats the competitive feel of racing. Feel the thrill as you race past your opponent, slam their car into a water trap, and beat them by a bumper to the finish line. Avoid obstacles, knock opponents, launch weapons, take shortcuts, engage turbo mode, and hit jumps with perfect timing to outrace your opponent every time!

Wacky Wheels, developed by Beavis Soft and published by Apogee Entertainment in 1994, is one of the most charming examples of early PC kart racing. At a time when console players were already enjoying the likes of Super Mario Kart, PC gamers had few comparable options. Wacky Wheels filled that gap with enthusiasm and humor, adapting the kart-racing formula to DOS computers in a way that felt both familiar and refreshingly eccentric. It replaced plumbers and mushrooms with animals and hedgehogs, giving players a roster of cartoon creatures to race around colorful, hazard-filled tracks. It wasn’t just a novelty for PC users—it was a vibrant, fast-paced, and surprisingly well-crafted title that helped bring a console-style experience to an audience that rarely got it. The game’s setup is simple but delightfully whimsical. Players choose from a cast of animal racers that includes a tiger, a raccoon, a shark, an elephant, a pelican, and others. Though they don’t differ mechanically, their quirky designs add personality to the races, giving each match a sense of playful character. The visuals are bright and lively, with pseudo-3D environments that use a clever scaling effect to simulate …

PROS: -Fun as hell -Characters -Weapons -Multiplayer rocks CONS: -No upscaling -Terrible framerate +-VERY tight controls (maybe too tight for some) SIDENOTE: I remember this being played with PC speaker sounds. Is there a way to turn this feature on? I like the soundtrack and sound design, but I'm pretty nostalgic for that buzzy, beepy PC speaker that came by default back in the day.

Fun trip down nostalgia lane. Game works pretty well on Steam Deck with good native mapping of controls.
