Who Summoned It?

[i]Who Summoned It?[/i] is a game that combines the detective solving of Golden Idol (sorry) with the open world of point-and-click adventures. It manages to avoid many of the potential pitfalls that come from combining the two to deliver an experience that is one-of-a-kind. Knotgud is oozing with charm. All the characters are lovely to talk to; they have distinct personalities and I enjoyed going through all the dialog options. I also found the evidence-gathering part of the game to be surprisingly user-friendly given the scope of the world. Many crucial pieces of information are cross-checked between multiple characters and places, making it easier to juggle all the information you'll need to solve the various mysteries in the game. The only "complaint" I have with the game (if you could call it that) is that it gets significantly narrower toward the end of the game. During the midgame, you have lots of different threads to poke at, and you can always move on to another mystery if you ever get stuck. But you can't do that at the end of the game. A beautifully written Golden Idol style deduction game, with great characterisation and a satisfying, well constructed mystery. This really is one of the best additions to the recent crop of fill in the blank mysteries. Particularly good if you want to enjoy some solid detective work without gore. I've never posted a review before, but this deserves a wider audience!

This game plays mostly like the Detective Grimoire/Tangle Tower point and click games, with a bit of extra complexity added via a somewhat Golden Idol-like deduction system. It's definitely not all the way there as a "Golden Idol-like", the fun really comes from the writing and characters moreso than the deduction gameplay, but it's still a fun time. It's an incredibly charming game that I enjoyed the entire way through, with only one single puzzle near the end that didn't quite work for me. The play time is a bit short. My playtime should be closer to 6 hours including the time I spent on the demo. That's not terrible, but I prefer to get a little more time out of a game like this.

This is a delightful little game. Fans of Golden Idol, Obra Dinn etc will enjoy this whodunit adventure. It follows a similar pattern to Golden Idol, fill-in-the-blank deduction towards a greater mystery but takes form of one adventure as opposed to distinct levels.

IMPORTANT NOTE: I played this game on Linux using Proton: the game runs smoothly with one exception: you will need to drag the answers to the answer boxes. Clicking on the answer with the box selected will sometimes lead to a game crash: it took me several hours to realize that was what was causing it. It's a testament to the game that I was willing to spend at least several hours battling with this bug! Dragging the answers completely side-steps this issue, which is good news for all the Linux users out there! Please play this game!! Onto the review itself: This is an absolute gem of a game!! I loved every second of it: the music, the characters, the witty dialogue, the mysteries! I think the game does a wonderful job of pacing it's multitude of mysteries that all, eventually tie together. And the amount is quite satisfying, too! Maybe the character information was a bit excessive to fill out (I didn't realize that there was a whole separate tab for them for the longest time, whoops), but otherwise solving mysteries never felt like a chore, I wanted to prove that I figured out what was going on. Im on the fence about recomending this. I know that its a skill issue, but this game is way too difficult imo. Other games of the same type are also tough, but at least the give you a bit of leniency/ hints. This one just gives no guidance. The hint system really needs an update, or the clues need to be slightly more obvious. Preferably the first suggestion. Update: Now there is a hint system! :)
