About Words Can Kill

Words Can Kill is a fusion of roguelike deckbuilders and word games. But this game isn't about your vocabulary. It's about your decisions and resource management. You will travel through the fantasy world and fight monsters trying to find a more efficient way to use your letters and your gear.

Features

  • Indirect synergies. It's hard to consistently use a powerful weapon that requires 6+ letters for bonus activation with a deck full of rare letters and without additional draw sources.
  • Plan your future turns. Are you ready for a strong enemy attack on the next turn? Don't use words now, place your letter tiles on the board and wait. This way you can make multiple blocks on the next turn and defend yourself.
  • RNG management. Replace tiles in your hand any time you want. But pay with your health.
  • Upgrade your deck. That tile with 'Q' poisons your life. Remove it from the deck on your next visit to the forge.
  • Easy to learn, hard to master. The game has simple mechanics but deep strategy. Only a true hero can save the princess!
  • Dozens of random enemies, random maps, tons of unique items. And it's a roguelike, so yet another stupid death awaits.

Don't even think about it, it's not worth it. the game plays its self.

There are quite a few deckbuilder / roguelike word games out there and this is one of the most original. It's really really tactical; it's not about knowing lots of words, it's about planning your moves and using the combos of gear and tiles synergistically. (I was really skeptical of the mode where the game simply tells you all the words you can make with your current hand, but actually hints don't make the game particularly easier, and anyway you can turn it off if you hate it.) The enemies feel genuinely different to each other and there's plenty of replayability and meta-game depth. The graphics are a bit rubbish, very generic cartoons, but aside from that a very satisfying game.

This game is great fun! I enjoy trying out the different weapon and armor enhancements, and trying to build my words around those strengths. I've played for just over 9 hours, and I have just now beat the first castle. I love seeing the new items that unlock after each run. Kudos on developing a keeper!

8/10 A charming little roguelike with a novel concept. This is the perfect blend of scrabble word-building mechanics and the typical deckbuilder roguelike. It could probably do with a little more depth to make the runs feel more distinct from each other (i.e., an artifact layer, or an item choice after each boss of items that can't be obtained in shops or in normal encounters), but overall, it has been quite enjoyable.

Not bad if it's > $5, but the game needs a little refinement, and it is certainly not worth $8! Consider this the quality of a arcade game, that you will play once or twice and walk away. With a little work, could be good.. but at this point it feels like a game you would find on a flash website.
