Beyond Words

"Scrabble" but with all the multipliers and board modifiers, and cards, and collectibles to make it quite Balatro-like. Colourful, fun, simple, plenty of levels and things to discover. Works great on Linux, first time, no hassle.

Almost great but it needs a balance patch or three. The scoring system is just plain broken.

It's definitely a good concept and makes for some engaging gameplay, but could be executed better. Initially I liked the game but the more I played it the less I like it. I'm not sure if I'll play it much if at all after this, that said I've done about 10 hours so far so it's at least recommendable from that point. It's not always clear to me what effect the cards and stuff have on the score, even though there are clear efforts to show this in the game. There's also way too many different things going on, different restrictions etc, so difficulty level is pitched too high initially. I know the idea is that as the player improves, they can come back and try those earlier levels again, but it's pitched too much in that direction. Also, the boss conditions vary wildly - you can be given an easy boss like no discards allowed, or a hard one like the target score is doubled. It's almost as if the developers just tried every idea they had and mashed it together, without trying to aim for a reasonable balance. This is an amazing roguelike word game. Fairly easy in the beginning but a bit more difficult later on

This game could have been great - Balatro combined with Scrabble. As a fan of both games and someone who is quite good at both games, I thought Beyond Words would be well worth a purchase. Instead playing it has been pure frustration. Here are the positives: + Reasonable amount of content for the modest asking price + The board design, each of which is unique, is a very good feature. In fact it is the only thing that motivated me to continue playing the game Here are the negatives: - Terrible Balatro elements. There are booster and power cards. The power ability cards that will dictate how your run goes are HORRIBLY unbalanced. It is almost as if the developers were intending for this to happen - Aggressive scoring targets for getting to the end of each board. Combined with the horrible balancing it makes for an incredibly frustrating experience - Very questionable dictionary. Even Scrabble is known for including some questionable words in its dictionary, this game goes far beyond that I normally don't like to down vote indie games but Beyond Words has been Beyond Frustrating to play for me.
