About Yume Nikki

✦ AI summary

Explore surreal dream worlds at your own pace, collecting mysterious "Effects" that transform your appearance and unlock special animations in this atmospheric, dialogue-free adventure. With no goals or story to guide you, Yume Nikki stands apart as one of Japan's most haunting and enigmatic indie games, challenging you to uncover its secrets through pure exploration.

An RPG Maker tour de force, and a divisively controversial work for fans.

You are free to explore the various dream worlds at your own pace.
If you check certain characters or items in the game you will collect an “Effect”. These “Effects” can be used to change the main character’s appearance.

Some of these “Effects” have special actions or animations which you can activate by pressing 1 or 3 on the number pad.

Yume Nikki is a very unique title that has become one of the most well-known indie games to come out of Japan.

It is unlike any other RPG, especially in the fact that there really is no action or dialogue to speak of. This gives the game a very dark and foreboding atmosphere. Can you make it to the secret ending?
  • There are no particular goals nor story of which to speak. You simply walk around.
  • Checking certain characters inside the dream will increase the number of "Effects".
  • Using "Effects" will cause the main character's appearance to change.
  • (During this time, you can use the 1 or 3 keys to implement special movements and effects.)
  • Using the same "Effect" a second time will cause the character to revert to their original form.
  • "Effects" can only be discarded inside rooms with many doors.

I went into this game expecting a horror rpg setting. But, I wouldn't say this is entirely horror. The game has a this silent haunting atmosphere. You wander, you get lost, you get frustrated. I'd suggest using a wiki if you feel lost or stuck in parts of the game. But the one thing that truly caught me off guard was the ending. I was not expecting anything like that from this game after pouring in those hours. It left me very disturbed, which most games aren't able to. So it means this game was able to accomplish it's goal. Overall, I'd say this is a very unique experience when it comes to indie pixel art rpgs.

Currently seeing how this game works. The idea of being in dreams looks a very good concept. Don't know that much about that game yet, but once I do the endings, I will edit this review and talk about this game.

Easy to complete, good OST and finished in 5 hours blind. I got the jist of it pretty fast. The maps were pretty fascinating to look at too, I guarantee with a tutorial you'd be able to finish it in less time.

It's free, i guess, so still at least try it out. The reason i went to go and play the game is because of how supposedly foundational it was for other games. But it's just a walking simulator for me. having no text isn't necessarily bad, i like hyperlight drifter for instance, but you gotta have some way of expressing some kind of story. nothing about this game is known for certain in any capacity which isn't bad on it's own but given the "gameplay" is just walking it means that there's no plot or gameplay. the visuals are nice but if i wanted a digital artbook i'd rather not be stuck at an RPG walking speed having to go through it all.
