About Kumitantei: Old-School Slaughter

Is survival in the cards?

Kumitantei™: Old-School Slaughter is an episodic murder-mystery ADV cardbattler that lovingly fuses retro anime analog horror with killing game! Kumitantei will consist of 6 episodes, beginning to release in early 2026."The Empire of Japan, 1989... Awoken in a decaying old bunker, sixteen elite Absolute Students are trapped in a kill-or-be-killed Apathy Experiment. Will they band together to uncover secrets of this anemoic alternate past, or lose their humanity and lives in the present?"With a visual style inspired by Rumiko Takahashi’s Urusei Yatsura and '80s anime alongside classic Japanese mystery-adventure games like Danganronpa and Ace Attorney, Kumitantei™ thrusts you into a suspenseful character-driven killing game narrative where your deckbuilding and detective skills are the only keys to surviving. It's a creepy-cute love letter to decades of ADVs that wears its many inspirations on its sleeve: perfect for fans of visual novels, detective games, and deckbuilders with deep narratives.

Features:

  • Bond with your classmates! Get to know the Absolute Class of '89 by listening to them, giving them gifts, and receiving powerful cards to use during debates!
  • Investigate grisly murders! Use your detective skills to comb through slain classmates’ crime scenes and take your evidence to trial!
  • Survive the trial! Cut through the lies and prove your case. Inspired by Ace Attorney and the cult classic Danganronpa series, Clinical Trials can only end in bloodshed, whether it's the culprit's or everyone else's!
  • Build your deck! Create absolute combos using cards you find in the Bunker and through bonding with your classmates to dominate the debates and trials!
  • Please insert coin! Test your retro gaming skills in a variety of faithfully crafted anemoic riffs on true old-school arcade icons!

This game is incredibly charming with its cast. Yes some will take you a bit to warm up to but believe me they're worth your time. The premise is as you'd expect, but it's only the beginning and what we've seen makes me hopeful for the rest. It's definitely very in line with danganronpa, and the class trials reflect that, with this game managing to make both a vn with flying words and a card battler somehow feel fast-paced. The card battler part could use some more fluff, but what there is is already fun, and the devlogs let us know they will already be adding new cards for us to get in the next episode's update coming out this november. The other minigames are pretty cute. The drama is there and I'm in love with it, that's all I can say really. Some aspects of the reasoning in the trial honestly eluded me, as in I'm not sure how we started talking about X or Y bit in the conversation, or why should I present evidence A to refute that theory, but overall the flow is still smooth so not too big of a deal, and after giving it time it grew on me. Besides this always happens lol I am absolutely in love with the soundtrack. It's so off-putting yet appealing I am obsessed with it, same w…

Excellent game for anyone who loved the Danganronpa series ! I really liked chapter 1 and was really left wondering who did it for most of the trial. Can't wait to see what's next !

Having played episode 1 to completion I can wholeheartedly recommend to anyone even moderately interested in detective/Murder mystery games. The cast are all endearing and unique with strong personalities that clash in interesting ways. Gameplay is solid and just as, if not more, engaging than its contemporaries with an intriguing plot that I'm eager to see developed over time

I really wish the writing was better polished. It immediately stood out to me and I can't get over it. It can be a real struggle to get through sometimes. I hope future episodes are edited more strictly, because we're mixing tenses, we're passing our phrases through a thesaurus filter, we're saying the same thing in three different ways, and we're patching over natural breaks just to keep a sentence running. And it's not all in service of the characters. Please! The writing is (or should be) the core of your game! Please treat it with more care. The rest seems, so far, to be exactly what I'd expect from a Danganronpa-inspired game. That may turn out to hurt Kumitantei in the long run, because I don't want just Danganronpa with the numbers filed off. But I'll reserve judgement till I get further in the story. EDIT: So I finished it. It falls into basically all of the same pitfalls as DR. So, listen, if you were trying to make a DR fangame, yeah, great! You succeeded. Unfortunately, it's just not got the same strength of writing and character work that DR has. The minigames are not fun. The card game seems to be going for something a bit more strategy based, but it really falls f…
