Tales of ARISE

I would very much like to give this game a thumbs-up. The story, setting, characters--especially the almost poetic pairing of the pain-immune Alphen and the thorn-cursed Shionne, and gameplay hold up well until you defeat the fifth lord and liberate Dahna. Then it all falls apart. Constant cutscenes and skits, most of which say too much and accomplish too little. They clumsily rehash events and information that has only just been revealed, and do nothing to move the story forward or develop the characters. There's one or two interesting reveals in there, as well as a few cutscenes that pay off on the hours you've spent getting there, but it's a whole lot of nothing happening. Honestly, the game should have ended after you liberate Dahna. But their premise of Renans arriving on Dahna from spaceships demanded a reckoning, and the developers and writers hadn't an ounce of creative energy left so they put the answers to any possible outstanding questions into a computer terminal and made you fight mid-tier bosses as field enemies in the final dungeon for 2+ hours before bringing back a middle-game boss for the end. It's called Tales of Arise.........but when I saw Shionne and Kisara..... let's just say,, Something else Arose...HehhehehHehehhehehehh Edit: this review will be severely edited once I finally find a wife and settle down.

This feels like an RPG that I'm too old for, in terms of narrative. The combat also feels really stiff and clunky compared to other action RPGs I've played before, and the characters feel more like archetypes reading off their TV Troupes page rather than believable people. Not sure if this is just the weakest entry in the series or if this is just not for me, but I don't recommend if you're over 15.

3/10 Whoever was responsible for creating names in this game needs to be fired (the monsters are called "Zeugles" ARE YOU KIDDING ME!). I can't hold a straight face when this word is spoken. What am I fighting, a fricken teletubbie? Besides that the graphics are nice, but seeing the same animation over and over is repetitive. Combat is clunky, Only a few moves can combo into eachother; This leads to slow and boring combat. Story is told through LAZY manga panel pictures of the 3D models. The areas you can walk around are uninspired or boring. Left it for a year and came back to it; To then be disappointed all over again. Don't bother with this one.

Finally finished Arise. Overall the experience I have is pretty good. there are some parts that really fall apart like how they did final act and etc., but I had a good time overall. The story is pretty mid at best but the what hooked me was the gameplay especially the combat. If you are here for a very good and complex story, this might not be for you.
