About Shining Resonance Refrain

Play as Yuma Ilvern and stop the Empire from exploiting the power of the ancient dragons, including the soul of the Shining Dragon within you. With the help of your friends, realize your destiny, save Astoria, and unleash the strength you’ve always had locked away.

In the original game, previously released only in Japan, Imperial Princess Excella was an unplayable character, but in the new “Refrain Mode” in Shining Resonance Refrain, both she and Dragonslayer Jinas can be added as party members for a new experience – just be sure to save this for your second playthrough to avoid any spoilers! As an added bonus, all of the extra cosmetic items and side quests are included in this remaster.

Dragons were long thought to be extinct, and because Yuma holds the ability to transform into the Shining Dragon, he was taken as a captive of the Empire. With the help of the Dragoneers, Sonia, princess of Astoria, pleads with Yuma to aid them in their fight to save their land from the Empire’s dominion. Typically timid, will Yuma find the courage to realize the strength he has within him?

✦ AI summary

Players consistently criticize the game for excessive mandatory grinding that gates story progression, with a combat system that relies more on stats than skill and devolves into repetitive button-mashing of single combos. The difficulty curve is poorly balanced and not adequately communicated to players, forcing them to grind for hours even on easy difficulty, while the story and characters are seen as clichéd and fail to compensate for the uninspired gameplay. Most reviewers recommend avoiding the game unless you're a desperate JRPG completionist willing to wait for a major sale.

This game expects you to do so much narrationless grinding in order to raise your level and acquire power ups that it is insane. The game doesn't teach you this, but the difficulty curve makes it evident once you see the infinitely respawning enemies and how they jump many levels above you after pretty much every story beat. The combat is a game of stats more than anything, and the devs expect you to slog through the same fights over and over for hours on end just to "unlock" the next story beat. It's just like a mobile game in that regard, and that formula isn't fun at all.

I'd only recommend this if you are a huge jrpg fan and have exhausted the list of studio jrpgs on Steam; even then, only buy it at a steep discount. Combat becomes repeating one combo over and over again. Boss battles become buff yourself with music, turn into a dragon, and spam attack. If you don't kill the boss during the dragon phase you go back to spamming the same original combo. The story and the characters are cliché in the worst ways and in no way make up for the lackluster gameplay.

I just don't think it holds up to modern RPG and JRPG standards. It really doesn't feel smooth to play, and I feel this makes the game feel needlessly difficult, unless it's just meant that way and supposed to be compensated with grind, can't really tell. (You also sometimes get forced out of playing your standard cast which is a massive nerf unless you planned for it.) Voicing is fine, music is fine, characters so far are..... I guess they're okay. Can consider playing this if your backlog is somehow empty and you see major sales.

Legitimately one of the worst JRPGs I have ever played. Even on sale, avoid at all cost. You have been warned.

I wanted to try and like this game. Playing on "casual" (easy) mode because I don't like grinding for hours. But guess what? You need to grind grind grind or each new boss is going to beat you. OK, so I'm fine with that. Then comes a battle where you fight an ice dragon. He is relatively easy if you grinded the latest enemies. Then after the battle a new guy shows up and helps you, then tries to fight you. So now you have to fight the new guy. Another new guy shows up on your side. You control him in a battle against the bad new guy. But he is WAAAAY too weak and by the time you have half the bad guy's HP bar gone you are out of your stockpile of items and out of MP and bad guy is still going. Your attacks are too weak and too slow to matter. Game over. RIP. So at this point, instead of grinding even MORE, I decided that was enough for me and I would just quit and watch a longplay. If you grind enough, then even if the new guy still joins at his same weakling power, the two other members in that fight will be really strong and you can get a win. This is on easy mode. It's only easy if you grind, baby, grind I guess. Very annoying and I do not recommend this game unless you like …
