Making History: The Great War

I will admit, in a world of HOI4 and universalis, I kinda love this game. yes its spread sheets the video game, but it rewards you for taking your time, building tech, building your economy, stockpiling food and weapons. it forces you to chose if you want direct control over a nation you conquered or is it better to make them an ally or puppet. The AI does act like it has a lobotomy from time to time, but that is mostly a problem when is come to diplomacy (British empire), but I like the idea of a turn based game were access to logistics and artillary make a huge difference and switching your economy from civilian production to war production is a choice. its interface is also surpassingly intuitive. yes its spreads sheets the game at times, but in the best way. that being said the game very much has its share of flaws too. Certain nations starting without basic resources to even function, research takes FOREVER no matter how much money you sink into public education and research buildings. It’s not flashy, but it’s one of the most mechanically rich and accurate WWI strategy experiences out there. Gameplay mechanics are a standout. This is where the game really shines. You’re managing production chains, building up infrastructure, balancing trade, planning military unit development, and orchestrating large-scale mobilization over time. It’s a true logistics-and-planning simulator. The turn-based design gives you time to weigh your options carefully, and everything from naval convoys to trench warfare has meaningful depth. Score: 10/10. Narrative is pretty light. The game provides a historical setup with accurate borders, alliances, and tensions, but it doesn’t guide you through a scripted storyline or major event chains. It's exactly how it looks. The game has some pretty complex mechanics and is *mostly* fun, but the AI can make some pretty strange moves. I played as Austria-Hungary in my only playthrough of this, and managed push pretty far into Russia and Serbia before the US invaded me via the Adriatic and my country collapsed before I knew what was happening. Not at all worth the $30 it's being charged at today. On sale for half that, yeah sure.

One of the worst grand strategies I've ever had the misfortune of playing. You need to experience all nine layers of Dante's Inferno, yourself to truly comprehend what I mean. All nine layers, being this game.
