Tower of Time

No. I have been playing with the hope the game gets better later on: As the characters level up, the items get more powerful, new spells, abilities and companions show up, thinking that surely I am only at the start and the game will get better as I progress... No, it doesn't. Every step of progression is dull, boring and underwhelming. Your characters don't level up with exp, they don't get any exp from fights. You search for building upgrades that raise your max level cap and gather gold to promote them to the next level. Every blueprint I think only raises the level cap for two levels. The stat leveling has no depth, every attribut (Might) raises a single attribute, (Damage) and after reaching a 10 point milestone putting more points in it gives one additional stat point (Armor Penetration) with points invested afterwards. Half the time you don't even know how obscure stats like Mastery affect your spell with bonus (extra healing per second on healing spell aura, extra arrows on arrow volley but how many?) until you lock in, and even then the difference is miniscule and underwhelming. Every ability/spell has two branches but you can't mix them up and the game re-ins…

While the visual design can be cool, the music and combat quickly become repetitive. The biggest issue is the writing; you are drowned in so much meaningless dialogue that it completely kills the atmosphere and ruins any sense of mystery. It has potential, but the pacing makes it hard to stay engaged.

Meh. I'm not very far into it, but so far it's fairly mid. The music is generic and repetitive. The story (so far) is kind of interesting, but the actual writing isn't great. The graphics are fine. Googling the studio, they're based in Poland, which is generally fine, but the English localization is not good. The tutorials are just popup windows with paragraphs of text that are frequently in somewhat broken English. Annoying, but not that big of a deal. The actual dialogue doesn't seem to have the same issues, so I'm guessing different parts were handled by different teams. A bigger problem is that it doesn't seem to have any auto saves. Meaning that when I finish a fight and the game crashes, I'm back to wherever I was at the beginning of my gaming session... even if that was an hour ago. I'm not sure if it's interesting enough for me to try putting more time into it.

Tower of Time is a good fit if you don’t play every day. You can walk away for a week, come back, and still want to see what happens next. That pull is almost entirely the story. Combat is real-time with pause. The default slow-motion didn’t work for me, so I switched to pause-and-play. That made fights easier to manage, but by the late floors the battles started to feel samey. I kept coming back for the plot and the tower’s secrets, not for another skirmish. This was my first real-time-with-pause game. It was easy enough to learn and enjoyable overall. I’ll check the sequel, Dark Envoy, mainly for the story. I’m hoping the combat there has more variety than this one did by the end.
