Deadly Sin 2

One of the OG indy JRPGs. It may not be the best, but it laid some solid groundwork for what was to come. These folks later made Symphony of War, which is one of the best tactical JRPGs.

Sorry, but the quality just isn't there. In the couple hours of the game I experienced many kinds of jank: misplaced sprites (torches floating in random empty spaces), random walls and buildings you could walk through (clearly unintentionally), cutscene/story glitches (people who aren't in my party yet taking part in conversations because I explored in a direction the game didn't expect me to explore yet), and more. Combine that with the otherwise bog standard RPGmaker game experience, and it's not clear that this game has anything to recommend it.

First Steam game where I've had to request a refund. At one point in the game it just crashes and there's no way past it. Up to that point it's an above average RPGmaker game with some interesting growth methods that make you feel like you're making progress. Without the bug, I'd probably tentatively recommend it.

A microbudget labor of love by someone with a clear affection for the great SNES RPGs. Sure, the writing isn't particularly good, the world isn't fresh or deep, and the story is boilerplate, but there is clear attention, care, and love put into this that punches well above its weight. While Hamilton is content with the old standards when it comes to his narrative, he innovates with Deadly Sin 2's gameplay, adding encumbrance and initiative systems, a winner-take-all threat system which enables actual tanking strategies, a point-buy skill system for the characters which results in "builds" (definitely novel for a game inspired by and mimicking the SNES-era JRPG), "monster nodes" that can be interacted with on dungeon levels to both turn off random encounters and acquire items that grant skill points to the character of your choice, and an assortment of "augments", items which may be applied to equipment to customize their bonuses. It all comes together quite well and if there's something really special here it's in Hamilton's design instincts. The game is fun until you get to the rimrouge battle then there is some kind of script error that causes it to crash. Tried the fix suggested in the forum but that doesn't seem to work. I doubt at this late the developer will fix it. If they do though the game is worth playing.
