What Steam players say

XIII Century – Gold Edition is a real-time tactics game that players compare favorably to Total War's battle system, praising its tactical depth and historical medieval setting, though it suffers from significant technical problems including screen scaling issues, crashes, and UI bugs that make it difficult to play reliably. Players who manage to get past these issues find it worth playing, particularly at a low price point, but the broken technical state is a major barrier that prevents a confident recommendation even to interested strategy fans.
XIII Century, developed by Unicorn Games Studio and published by Fulqrum Publishing, is a historically grounded real-time tactics game that places its entire focus on recreating large-scale medieval battles of the 13th century. Available on Steam in its Gold Edition, which combines Death or Glory and the standalone expansion Blood of Europe, the game distinguishes itself by narrowing its scope to battlefield command rather than empire management. Instead of overseeing cities, diplomacy, and long-term economic growth, players are thrust directly into historically inspired engagements, where positioning, timing, and unit discipline determine victory. The core of XIII Century lies in its tactical combat system. Battles are fought in real time across open 3D landscapes that attempt to reflect historical geography and conditions. Players command armies composed of infantry, cavalry, archers, and specialized medieval units, each with distinct strengths and battlefield roles. Heavy cavalry charges can shatter poorly positioned infantry lines, disciplined spear formations can hold ground against mounted assaults, and ranged units provide essential support when properly protected. DO NOT BUY THIS. Broken out of the box. This is so busted technically. It looks okay on OBS though on screen about 1/4 of the bottom is outside of the screen. This happens no matter what resolution you pick, 4:3, 16:9, native resolution - it happens all the same. It actually crops more of the screen when you use the 4:3 resolutions for some reason. It is as if the footage of the game is scaled up for some reason and it does not fit the screen. Other people have other issues. Just do not get involved with this one.2 found this helpful
Great game. Very similar to Total War without the strategic layer. The battles are a bit more tactical and less arcadei than Total War but if play T/W you will be able to pick this up and play it pretty much right away. There are a few differences in the UI but you will figure it out pretty quickly. Nothing overly complicated. I really wish this game had been more popular and allowed the series to branch out into different time periods. It would have been a worthy adversary to T/W. Oh well, still very much worth playing and for $5 there's really no reason to wait for a sale. Very underrated and underappreciated.1 found this helpful
