About Together We Live

"Awakening"

Kyoya awakens in a dimly lit room.
According to the girl who happened to pass by, the world has perished.
Reluctant to believe, Kyoya sets off with the girl to search for other living beings,
journeying through the ruined world together.

However, the girl had a purpose.

"The Girl's Purpose"

To atone for the sins of humanity,
she must continue to die.
Again and again, dozens of times, hundreds of times, thousands of times, tens of thousands of times.

She dies and then comes back to life.
As he watches her, who knows only suffering,
Kyoya starts to desire to teach her about happiness.

This is a strange one, and despite being short, I can’t really recommend it. Overall a workable story, with atmospheric music and a stunning art style. It's also a philosophical title, although the philosophical parts are too blatant. Actually the whole plot is way too straightforward. The English translation is readable but not enjoyable. The Japanese text is not difficult. If you really want to read the story, read that instead. The story is more or less the story of Jesus Christ, transplanted onto a little girl, but with humanity already far gone. Then it is made into a Japanese visual novel where the hero saves the princess. It even follows the standard romance formula, complete with a melodramatic third-act breakup and inconsistent character arcs. The deeper worldbuilding is interesting though, and is done in more subtle ways than the philosophical bits. Sadly, the sci-fi worldbuilding is rarely put to use by the plot. Also, the sense of deep time does not really land emotionally, albeit being a pretty promising premise.

Together We Live is a sorrowful and emotionally driven kinetic visual novel that centers entirely around loneliness, human connection, and the painful search for hope within a ruined world. Developed by Water Phoenix, the game abandons traditional gameplay mechanics almost completely in favor of a fully linear narrative experience focused on atmosphere, philosophical reflection, and character relationships. Instead of presenting branching routes or player-driven choices, the story unfolds like a tragic novel where the player quietly follows the emotional journey of two deeply broken individuals wandering through the remains of humanity. The result is a melancholic and introspective experience that relies on emotional sincerity rather than spectacle or interactivity. The story begins with Kyoya awakening in a world that has already collapsed. Civilization is gone, cities stand empty, and humanity appears to have disappeared completely. Shortly after waking, he encounters a mysterious girl who explains the horrifying truth surrounding the world’s destruction. However, the girl herself suffers from an even crueler fate. Burdened with atoning for humanity’s sins, she is trapped in an …
