Without Within

It's a short and simple story. It takes at least 10 minutes to play through without skipping.

You know what? Loved it. A game that didn't sacrifice its integrity and charm. Inspiring is an understatement!!

This visual novel is not recommended. The TL;DR: First, there are no real choices for you to make. Any "wrong" choice instantly gives game over. There is one story here. And that story isn't all that good. The "good ending" is about the same as one of the "bad" endings -- artist goes crazy in public after her work is insulted. The story: It's a short story about an artist that is trying hard, and along the way, accidentally realizes that she's allowed her spark, her love, her passion to die off. And the story ends with it being reignited. But I did not find it more than a passible / C-grade story. There's better stories out there, much better.

Game is unplayable in 1920x1080. A good portion of the bottom and top of the screen is cut off, both in windowed and fullscreen modes. Clicking on Options or Credits in the main menu will not allow you to return to the main menu. I understand this is a free and older game, but I just wanted to make people aware of this. EDIT: It works perfectly in 1280x720 resolution.

This is a very short story about a struggling artist who's lost hope about her work. I think this game likes to believe it tells the reader to simply persist and be kind to people and things will go your way. And, in some sense, that's exactly what it says. But it's also a very linear and ridgid experience. Rant about your work not selling; You get uploaded to the internet as crazy. Don't help a lost boy; He's dead the next day. Don't play a game; You eventually lost all motivation to make art and die a failure. The game is ridgid about the way to tells it's story and juts flat out tells you that you made the wrong choice and need to start over again. Scope and time is of course the reason for this choice in story design. I would say that giving the reader the illusion of choice in this way simply shows the reader that your choice is meaningless. "You have to choose the option I say is correct. If not, I won't let you read further." If the game simply let the story flow the way the author intended from the start, there would be a bigger empahsis on the message the game ultimately wants to tell you.
