Red Faction II

If you really love Red Faction 1 but haven't played II you're probably going to be disappointed. It seems Volition completely misread fan feedback and enthusiasm about RF1 and inexplicably went a very different direction with this sequel. When I picked this game up for PS2 back in the day I hoped for a continuation of RF1's story, more or better RF1 style gameplay, and more geo-mod fun. Story wise this game borrows one macguffin from RF1 but is otherwise completely unrelated and the game takes place on Earth. The gunplay feels about the same as RF1 with some variations. RF II actually pulls back on the geomod tech that made RF1 unique and it's barely used in the campaign. If you liked RF1's multiplayer you're out of luck here as Volition inexplicably decided to not include online MP on RF II. All that said, I do like RF II. I've spent hours speed running it and I think it's kinda a charming microcosm of its time. The story and dialogue is cheesy on purpose as it's meant to be a satire to the typical action shlock that was popular in the early 00's. Feels like a background game in a 2000s tv show

Playing this after Red Faction is like playing Deus Ex, and immediately playing Invisible War after it. The story is out of place in the series. The platforming in the game is meh. The level designs are meh. The poor color schemes make it hard to see what's what. The shooting feels worse than the first game. The checkpoint system is worse. It just seems a downgrade in so many ways. the GeoMod engine is absolutely over-rated at this time. It's nothing special, and had I bought this off of the advertising at full price...I'd be livid,. The game also broke for me near the end. It told me I needed battle armor to continue, but the door wouldn't open. While I don't get every platinum, I finish almost every game I buy. I got it for $2 to check it out. Don't pay more. it's really just a waste of time. Good riddance to you, as wasting someone's time is the worst thing you can do. Been playing games since '78, and I know why I missed this one back then.

Probably one of worst sequels ive ever played, Red Faction 1 was such an important game to my childhood, its a shame that this is where they went with it.

This is one the bad red faction games. If you want to put on a podcast and just run through it, it's fine, but it's not engaging enough to ever stand out in the pantheon of shooter history. That was the reception on release and that's the perception now - they made up for it with Guerilla of course. Go play that.

Wow all I can say is just wow.. what happened to this franchise already? Red Faction 2 is probably one of the weirdest sequels I've ever played for any game. I'm not sure you can even call this a sequel because it so loosely ties into the first game you can skip it and play this one and miss nothing. The game has you playing as a new character named Alias who is part of some group of other super soldiers or something, honestly the dialogue and the cutscenes were directed so poorly it was honestly hard to understand what was going on. You work your way through some levels until you finally decide its time to kill some dictator dude and then BAM we're at the climax of the game. The rag tag team separates and you gotta get revenge. If theres anything I noticed with volition games is that they are mostly always about getting revenge on those who wronged you. After some boring fights you finally get revenge and beat them. My first initial thoughts are I'm very disappointed with the way red faction is portrayed in this game. Sure they weren't portrayed any better in the first game since they are useless but here they are even more useless and used as nothing but fodder for the enemy.…
