Xross Dreams

The game is cool, but the fact that there's little to no controller support and practically no way to back out of a menu once you're in it until you're in-game makes things a bit hard to navigate. EDIT: After playing it for like an hour, I'm not entirely sure I'd recommend it to people. Nothing is directly explained, aside from the tutorials telling you how each character's play-style works. Or, if there is, I couldn't find it. As for the "can't back out of menus" thing it's mostly just the screen where each player picks their side. The back button doesn't do anything and ESC won't work either (it even counts as an actual input key when setting controls, despite being the menu key). I tried the story mode, but genuinely got stuck on one part because a boss kept spawning adds and then immediately running before I can get a combo set up, and the enemies would have to eat my combo because I'd have to set up another one otherwise. Come to find out, there's a mechanic in the game that's not directly told to you where sending garbage (or whatever the alternative for that play-style is) during an AI's "thinking" phase will interrupt it for a bit and give you extra time to think. I love puzzle games, especially most of the games represented in this game. I love competitive games and the act of two players facing off with their chosen style and only their own abilities and planning to fall upon. Xross Dreams should be the perfect game for me, but it falls short in every way it possibly can. Visually it's an awful mess, menu navigation is horrendous, and above all else it's a game released in 2022 with no real controller support?! Xross Dreams is touted as a versus game that you can play offline or online, but I can't do either. Online with rollback is advertised but literally doesn't work, and I can't get the game to allow a local second player to even exist. I have a keyboard and two X-input controllers connected, and all of them can only be used by a single player; once I map controls for one of the players that's it, I can't get a second player in. Even games like Gal Guardians allow a single keyboard to be shared by 2 players at the same time. I could potentially play this as just a single player game, but that's not why I bought. Let me start by saying I love the crossover aspect, every character is fun to learn and all of them, as well as enemies, are fantastically converted. The presentation is surprisingly great, all characters ooze with charisma and the choice of music has really made a move on me, all resulting in an addicting game that I consider one of my favorites on my library. I'm not sure how much other positives I can give to this game, it's just really really made for me. Great job! Right now I'd like to play this game more but the single player is really limited: besides the plots, there is no Versus CPU mode and the sandbox mode is confusing. For a niche genre like action puzzles, I think having simple options to play alone should be a priority, and I'm really hoping a Versus CPU can be added in the future. There is a few bugs but they don't annoy me that much.

It's a little rough around the edges, but everything works well enough in local play and there is nothing else quite like it.

At the moment, this game is broken on a fundamental level. Frequent crashes abound. The control scheme in the menu is horrific, requiring you to select your controls every time you play, without the option to back out. If you hit the wrong key on accident when setting up your keybindings? Time to exit the game and restart, because you cannot go back. Go into the wrong submenu? Exit the game and reboot. In-game, information is either not telegraphed or is falsely telegraphed. Dinosaur, for example, has a guideline showing which direction his shot goes. Unfortunately, it does not correspond directly to where the shot actually goes, leading to frustrating moments. The artwork is pretty rough. As a first step, I can understand it, but I hope that it is not the final product. Singleplayer is not great. The tutorials are absolutely awful. I really wanted to like it, but the hour and a half I've spent playing it has been riddled with annoying bugs and frustrating UI choices. It's a shame, because the glimmers of potential you see when you play are very promising, but immediately disappear once you encounter the next frustrating problem.
