FINAL FANTASY TYPE-0™ HD

Given that it was originally a PSP game only released in Japan, I am very glad that it was later on ported over and made available here in the West. Crazy that only 9.2% of players actually got all the way to the credits... Trey and Jack are my MVPs!

People dying: the game I have a soft spot for this game. I played it a bit in its PSP form a long time ago, and having finally getting to replay it in its HD form now, it's still a surprisingly dense game despite its appearances. + That battle system is so simple and yet so fast and effective. Killsight/Breaksight encourages you to memorize the enemy movements. Magic feels really powerful. + The overall atmosphere and the documentary-style story is so well-done. The large-scale combat scenes especially are all amazing. + That soundtrack still holds up to this day. Some of it sounds different compared to the original PSP tracks, at least from what I remember, but it's no dealbreaker. + The game has a sizable amount of side content. A good chunk of the world map requires you to do some side stuff, just doing the main story won't get you there. + They got rid of all the multiplayer-dependent feats and made them unlockables instead which is a definite plus. - Ironically, the HD graphic overhaul is the worst thing. Gone are the sepia/red filter they had in the original PSP which gave everything that grimy look. And they only revamped Class Zero's models, leaving everyone else the sam…

I must say that in first glance i was captivated by pretty intro, awesome music, premise of serious, bloody war story and artstyle, but later i changed my mind. Its obviously that this was PSP game, but graphical upgrades are so inconsistent. New detailed models of important characters looks out of place between old models and low res textures of enviroment. This also Final Fantasy return to anime military school motiff and it's much more important than in FFVIII, but school itself is empty and boring as a gameplay feature. Whole game seemed for me laborious like it was made to be artifical longer than it would be otherwise and it was rejecting for me. Also action based battle system is rather clunky and chaotic and in beginning i event didn't now what i'm doing. Some time later i catched it some, but still, i didn't like feeling of fights. And lastly, i think storytelling is weak here. They give you fourteen similar characters and you don't know nothing about them. Dialogues seems akward and not natural and directing of cutscenes is hilarious bad. I didn't manage to endure cons of this game, seems like a waste of time to play more.

This is like my 3rd actual FF game ever completed, this time around I was actually able to sit and enjoy the game and its mechanics, previously I had tried multiple times to get into it, but a lot of things were not clicking with me at the time, the story, the combat, basically the whole game. I thought the game wasn't for me till recently after deciding to give it a third try. I had to do some research in the beginning like the characters using different names for the 4 regions because one region can go by a multitude of names, what a L'cie even is because its not mentioned in any of the previous games I've played. How to really get the combat because you can try to play this game like a button masher but you will be punished for it more or less if you don't play properly. After getting to learning how those things work and reading up on some basic knowledge and terms of the game I was finally able to finish it without it feeling like a slog this time, I enjoyed my time with class 0, learning about the story even and seeing how it ends. I suppose this goes for most JRPGS but my only gripe about the story is that you absolutely do not get the full picture of what's going on…

This game is not for everyone. It is a product of its time as a PSP game, a handheld lacking a right joystick and both triggers (L2/R2) equivalents, but unfortunately caught up in trying to compete with other games like Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep (2010) and Type 0 came out in 2011. Then money had to be cut for the failed Versus XIII that then rolled into FFXV in 2013. This is a prelude to a game that has noticeable budget cuts, especially near the rushed ending, and gameplay that can feel clunky at times or needing more time for development or put on a better console. Playing it in Japanese works fine, some recognizable voices for the anime crowd are here and well and as usual, great. The English felt off in a markedly Japanese military setting. The story is drip fed and broken up into akin to Persona titles with a "School" side which is talking to NPCs, buying items, picking up quests, upgrading magic, etc. You can explore the world but it eats into your "freetime", which they give a lot of so I didn't feel too pressured so long as I had my priorities down.
