Safe to say nostalgia is not a factor that is determining my opinion of the game. Also I am aware this version of the game (the 2013 port) has been delisted from Steam with only the re-release as the available option I'll likely be copying this review over once I'm done playing that and I'll include any criticisms that may show up or any positives. But onto the review: First a quick comparison between the remake, multiverse, sequel hybrid trilogy (Trilogy after revelation comes out) and the OG (Aka the game this review is for) The OG is far better than the remake trilogy, especially in terms of Storytelling, pacing, tone, characters (Characters in terms of iconic character design, personality and likeability the remake changed a lot of these for the worse but this review is for the original so I won't be doing any more comparisons beyond this point until the gameplay category), the dark and grim tone of the game …1 found this helpful
You can't buy this version of the game anymore. Oh well.
I mean, what can I say -- It's Final Fantasy VII, one of the greatest games ever made, although I certainly am tainted by a lot of nostalgia, as the modding scene around this game at Qhimm's forums is what got me really hooked into graphics and 3D programming and the game modding scene back in the early days of 2000, and today I teach programming courses at a university... it's a real shame that SE doesn't allow you to buy this 2013 version anymore, as this works really well with various mod managers, which allow you to play the game with 30 or 60 FPS during the battles, whereas the original game ran only at a depressing 15 FPS in the battles, which is really painful to watch these days. I have replayed this game in 2025 on Linux and it brought back a lot of good memories, especially after SE kind of botched the remake with a weird broken combat system...
THIS is getting all the hype. All rose tinted glasses. FF7 is mid on a good day. But hey, square got their cashcow and just ignores the rest.
