About Carnival

After agreeing to take on what seems like a mundane story about the unique city and its planned road bridge, journalist James Maynard finds himself uncovering a disturbing underbelly to the local customs, and a hideous core to the notion of Venetian pride.
Not even the might of Mussolini can truly kill the Carnival. Winner of Best Lines of Dialogue - Adventure Games Of The Year 2025.

Carnival is an atmospheric folk horror point-&-click set in a time of European upheaval, where the past and the future collide. The protagonist must struggle with narcolepsy and its effect on both his memory and perception of the increasingly twisted reality around him. The game features atmospheric low-resolution pixel art graphics, multiple locations drawn from Venice itself, and developing relationships with NPCs, allowing the player to influence events in the game and achieve multiple different endings.
Carnival now also features the full soundtrack (over three hours of atmospheric soundscapes), playable through Steam, for free!
Developed by Beyond Booleans, creator of Abscission, winner of three AGS awards.

Carnival is, above all, one thing: incredibly well written! Believable and multi-layered characters, a realistic portrayal of 1930s Venice, a great atmosphere (thanks to the fitting soundtrack) and a lovely old-school pixel art style. The focus is clearly on the mysterious horror story, rather than on puzzles, which suits me down to the ground. All in all, a really great game – I’m looking forward to the next game from this solo developer!

Carnival is a highly atmospheric, slow burning point-and-click adventure in a low-res pixel art. As the English journalist James Maynard, plagued by his own demons and problems, you visit Venice. Actually, you want to write about a car bridge planned to connect Italy with the city in the lagune and reconnect with an old friend, but while interviewing people and exploring the streets, you get the feeling something else is a miss in the city on the water. Carnival is highly atmospheric, whit great dialoged, character portraits and puzzles. I can not recommend it highly enough for those who are into point and click and “Dark Worlds”/ Lovecraftian-like-horror. Truly a great game that deserves far more attention than it got so far.

A few typos and minor bugs, but nothing that ruined my enjoyment, and the creeping atmosphere of dread kept me riveted to my computer. A toothsome, meaty little morsel of a game.

Fun (albeit rather short) lovecraftian point and click adventure with outstanding writing and musical score. Recommended as a companion for rainy day!
