Arcade Spirits: The New Challengers

I don't know; this game does have some nice attributes, but in the end, the negative things just outweigh them, unfortunately. The good: the characters have fun sprites, the worldbuilding is fun, the NPCs are fascinating, and there is plenty of stuff to unlock. The voice acting was usually very nice, and the music could be nice too. I also appreciate the option to skip the mini-game, as I find it just boring. Theoretically, the game is also highly replayable—if you wish to see the various romantic options and such. Though...this is kind of where it goes downhill. I do like some of the friends of the protagonist, but I feel like the friendships are super rushed—when we first meet them, we are strangers, and yet somehow we become the team manager immediately. While I do appreciate the characters having flaws (MC included), it often felt half-assed. Conflicts were immediately solved by talking once. That's not how this works, especially not if the character who is in an argument is super dramatic and then magically ends up being calm about the whole ordeal after talking with MC once. I went into Arcade Spirits: The New Challengers expecting an improvement over the first game, and in a lot of ways, it absolutely is. The sprites and overall presentation are noticeably better, and the story feels much more ambitious. There’s a lot going on narrative-wise, sometimes almost too much, but I still found myself really invested in the characters and their relationships. I especially liked seeing returning characters and connections to the first game. It made the world feel more connected and rewarding for people who played the first. That said, I do understand most of the criticism surrounding the game. One of my biggest issues was the handling of certain character interactions, especially Jynx’s first interaction and the way the protagonist responds to Domino’s depression. Some moments that were clearly meant to be emotional or supportive ended up feeling insensitive or awkwardly written instead. The main character technically has an arc, but they often came across as boring or emotionally tone-deaf, which made it harder to connect with them. I think fiction factory managed to catch lighting in a bottle twice. The soundtrack, visuals, and vibe beats the original, and the character arcs feel more layered. The addition of being able to customize your rival is also a rare sight, but welcomed. It had jaw-drop moments for me, heavy story beats that do cause huge shifts in the tone of the game without losing its charm. Its got its fair share of slice of life moments too, and develops ALL of the characters, depending on who you choose to warm up to. There's always a reason to replay. It's a cozy and entertaining found-family story just like the first, one of the best in this genre!

I might be in the minority here, but I enjoyed Arcade Spirits: The New Challengers much more than the original. Everything is improved, and the characters you interact with are much more fleshed out. This game has better character design, better voice acting, and a better overall story line. And the inclusion of the Fist of Discomfort 2 mini game was a nice addition too. Some content warnings to be aware of before buying the game: There is LGBTQ+ representation among several characters in the story. and each of your main companions can be romanced, regardless of your avatar's appearance or pronouns. So if that bothers you, you should skip this one. There are situations in the game that depict bullying, gatekeeping, bigotry, harassment, depression, and self-harm. If those are triggers for you, you will probably want to skip this game. Overall, Arcade Spirits: The New Challengers is an improvement over the first game. If you liked the original, you'll like this one. It's a quick 8-10 hour play through, and has high replay value because of the different romance options. It's worth your time, and is definitely worth picking up, especially if it's on sale.

I absolutely loved the time I spent with this game, and was sorry to see it end. As usual from Fiction Factory Games, great writing, great characters, lovely art and music, and a really easy choice system that makes it easy for multiple runs through the story. Just a fantastic game from start to finish. <3
