Select Oblige

The translation for Select Oblige is the exact reason why I hesitate on ever calling translations that omit honorifics or change conversations around them as "bad". This is truly one of the worst TLs I've seen, but I don't think it's for a lack of trying. There's clearly effort put into it at points; even the save file scene names translated, as well as the credits. It reads like they ran out of budget and couldn't find an editor for polishing the script and had someone's cousin finish out the untranslated bits. There is an actual compelling narrative here in this story. It's not phenomenal, and it's definitely a little out there at points, but it's definitely emotional and the love stories are quality. The music is a notch above average, and the art is pretty good. I wouldn't say the work has any complex themes beyond "who you are and where you come from does not define you; it is what you do and the reasons why". There is also a not tremendous but still significant tonal shift once the common route ends. I really enjoyed the protagonist in this game. This is the first visual novel I've actually dropped because the translation was just so awful. Heroines, plot, music, and art are all above quality, but the translation is horrible that it detracts from the whole experience. If you are planning to read the English version I'd highly recommend staying away.

The translations are throwing me off, but it's readable still. That's what I have to say for now.

A good VN to pass the time. Because the english isn't that great, you need at least few years experience with anime and stuff to compensate with bad translation and miss pronoun. It's especially easy if it's voice line. Japanese is quite expressive with their words, because of this, sometime I feel like the translation can do better when there are exaggerated moments in the VN. With all that said about the translation, you can still definitely understand the story flow. Just need more brain power than usual. For the story itself is the usual lighthearted kind of moege. But there's part that I feel like it's unnecessary or too convenient or like speedrunning the route. Kaname and Kukuru route ended nicely. Honestly I like Eve. Her heroine power is quite high. Her route is more shounen than rom-com. Tori is the weakest one. Her route is the extension and resolve of the common route villain. Overall score 7.5 Recommended to finish Kaname last, because marriage is the best end to finish VN.

Teio is the Fatty Wang homie we all deserve. Select Oblige was a really fun read for me. The whole story is well put together and as far as I paid attention there were no glaring plot holes and such. The common route was the strongest section of story in my opinion. They did a fantastic job introducing all the characters and giving the reader time to learn and grow attached to each heroine. By the time I started into a heroines route I already had a good understanding of their character and motivations from just the common route alone. I really loved how through the routes I really felt all the characters personal growth, and not just the heroine in her route but even the supporting cast also grew in different ways depending on the routes. The voice acting for the whole novel was really well done, and it may have just been the patch for the game, but even though a lot of other reviews had complaints about the translations I think it was really well done minus the space after all the apostrophes in dialogue. The art is really cute, the voice acting is good, and I like the soundtrack. At first, the story feels a bit boring, but I started to enjoy it once I entered the heroine’s route. To sum it up, the story is similar to a romance harem anime—not that it’s bad. There’s one route I really liked, while the rest are just okay. Overall, it turned out to be a great experience. Oh yea, people say the translation is bad, that’s true, and the resolution is quite off. But it's still enjoyable at least for me. The playtime is kinda long and I don't think it's worth spends 20 hours for all the routes.
