About Ogre Tale

✦ AI summary

Ogre Tale is a 2D sprite-based beat-em-up where three ogre sisters and their cat mentor fight to stop a bored villain terrorizing the Japanese countryside with yokai and mononoke. Team up with friends in online or offline multiplayer to unleash devastating combos, gather loot, and strengthen your characters across Japanese-inspired demon-slaying action.

Once upon a time, Momotaro (a.k.a. Peach Boy) and his allies, Kintaro and Issuntaro, wiped out the tribe of ogres who plagued the Japanese countryside, and everyone lived happily every after.

...Until now, anyway.

Centuries later, Momotaro's descendant -- bored of life as a bar host (!) -- decides to run amok and terrorize the Japanese countryside with mononoke and yokai and all those other Japanese mysticism-related things you've probably heard the tiniest bit about from some anime somewhere. Not because it's his destiny or anything; just because he CAN.

With the hero now serving as villain, it's time to flip the script and turn the villains into heroes! Or... comparatively less bad villains, at least? Ran, Hana, and Yume -- sisters who are descended from the very ogres Momotaro once took down -- must join forces with a kitty cat named Iroha who serves as their mentor, narrator, and caregiver (?) to rid the world of the pink, peachy menace and his fairytale folkhero-turned-villain flunkies in this action-packed tongue-in-cheek Japanese-inspired beat-em-up other-words-separated-by-hyphens romp-o-rama!

What kind of game is it, you ask? Why, it's...
 • ...a 2D sprite-based beat-em-up with multiple playable characters! Three of them, in fact! Play alone, team up with friends in online or offline multiplayer, or mix and match as the spirit moves you!
 • ...a chance to take out your aggressions on unsuspecting Japanese demons and ghoulies! Unleash ground-shaking combos, counters, and special moves with ease, and chain 'em together to rain devastation upon all who stand in your path!
 • ...a showcase of weird and wonderful zombies and demons and crows (oh my!) who all want you dead, dead, dead!
 • ...an RPG, kinda, sorta! I mean, it's got experience, coins, and other loot you can use to strengthen your characters and their skills, so that's all it takes, right? Right?!

So get ready; victory is in reach! It's time to go out and

[後半に日本語レビューあり]
Cute Ogre Sisters in a Folktale-Flipped Beat-Em-Up
The premise here is an inverted Momotaro folktale. In modern-day Japan, centuries later, Momotaro's descendant has turned villain out of sheer boredom — marshaling yokai and monsters to terrorize the countryside. Standing against him are the descendants of the very ogres he once defeated: sisters Ran, Hana, and Yume, alongside their cat companion Iroha, who serves as narrator, mentor, and caretaker. Built on the premise of heroes-turned-villains and villains-turned-heroes, the game sustains a lively flow of meta-comedy and fourth-wall-breaking banter throughout. This sense of humor is arguably the game's defining strength. Gameplay is a side-scrolling beat-em-up built around loot drops, experience points, and weapon upgrades for a lite hack-and-slash feel. Each of the three sisters has a distinct playstyle, and character selection adds genuine variety. The difference in feel between each sister is clear enough that clearing the game with one naturally motivates a second run with another. Combat deepens progressively as ultimate attacks are unlocked — many reviewers note the game truly comes into its own fro…

Fantastic game with a great art style. Negative reviews are written by idiots who were expecting a Phantom Breaker sequel.

What's here is basically a shell of a game. There's some solid potential that's completely squandered. Graphics are beautiful, enemy designs are neat and strange, the fighting mechanics are decent... but it's all thrown out the window because of how everything else comes together, and that's a shame. How these guys create Vanillaware-quality graphics and a distinctive art style with decent combat and then waste it with short and mindless levels easily completed in sub-3 hours with no effort only that long because it's padded and you might get distracted by side missions hoping for SOMETHING to do is just terrible. How did the team behind Phantom Breaker Battlegrounds, which had flaws but was ultimately a fantastic beat-em up with Treasure-style grouping dudes in the corner and smashing em all at once for a shower of coins stumble so badly? Levels are basically walking into a screen, the computer moving your character to the center of the "arena" area, and things spawn. Sometimes they're right on top of you, sometimes they're invisible and slowly float down after like 10 seconds. Kill everything and the wall boundaries go away, and you move on. It's all flat, and you're usually ru…

i find very hard to recommend this game, it had everything to be great, improved graphics from phantom breaker overdrive, a less chibi art style, and what looked like a deep combat akin to overdrive, sadly that is not the case, while the voice acting presentation and graphics of ogre tale are amon the best on the anime beat em up sub-genre the actual gameplay lacks far too much in variety, QoL to not just become a mashing nightmare or quite simply boring. overdrive had a large cast of characters that had their own unique traits, 3 specials, a ligh and heavy attack and a level up system akin to river city ramson that made the combat feel very fun and distinct, ogre tale removes pretty much all of that, makes a dull, slow paced and repetitive beat em up, is honestly one of the few game i regret buying

It was interesting but why is it so hard to get the multiplayer you have to jump through many hoops to get it and that kills this for me
