About [Chilla's Art] Okaeri | おかえり

Okaeri is a Japanese horror game about a middle school girl and her mother who recently moved to a new house.
It's 6:00 pm, coming back home expecting a welcome from your mom, instead, she finds unexpected things happening before her eyes.
The game is inspired by short omniverse Japanese horror films.

Key Features:

Immersive experience: An atmospheric photo-realistic graphics intensifies the horror experience. The minimalistic design makes the player fully immersed in the ambiance.

VHS film aesthetic: VHS aesthetic emulates look and feel of CRT screens including phosphor screen trail and bleeding, VHS tape noise, interlacing, and jitter in the analog video signal adding extra immersion to the horror experience.

A short narrative exploration: An exploration heavily focused on ambiance and narrative. Collect pieces of the past and present to find out what's going on from the protagonist's perspective with native Japanese voice acting which enhances the player's experience. People who love games like Gone Home and The First Tree might love this part of the game. The testers played for about 20-40min.

Gameplay: This game is played primarily like a "walking simulator."

Psychological horror: You are alone, but feels like someone is watching you. Keep going and you'll find out.

✦ AI summary

Players appreciate Okaeri's atmospheric horror approach and unsettling psychological tension, but criticize its brevity, vague environmental design that makes progression confusing, and a thin story with a rushed ending that lacks depth. While some enjoyed it as a short experience, others felt disappointed by the limited narrative content and wished for more substantial storytelling or a sequel to expand on the concept.

Short and sweet. And when I say short, I mean REALLY short. I was very explorative and thorough, which amounted to about 30 minutes of playtime. The atmosphere was perfectly crafted, and mostly all this game has to offer. That doesn't mean it's bad, but it's more like a really well done tech demo for a horror game. The horror elements, though sparse, were actually pretty scary and much more well crafted than Chilla Art's first 4 games. This being the 5th game in the available lineup, I'd say it's the first one I would sit a friend down to play. I wouldn't say it's a must play or anything, but it was certainly a good half hour.

As a free demo, this would've been a recommend. However, this is a 5 minute experience that costs $3 and severely lacks any depth in story or gameplay.

one of the first games chilla's art ever released and it's not even that bad. okaeri is very short, it's your average 20 minute walking simulator with a VHS filter and some light jumpscares. it's not that scary, the story is extremely simple and there's not a whole lot to it. but it's $3, it does exactly what it says it does, and it's decent enough for me to spend 20 minutes playing it fully. it's nowhere near the level of chilla's more recent games but that's to be expected and it's honestly awesome to see how much they evolved as developers. if you're just getting into chilla's art, i probably wouldn't start here, but if you want to go through the whole collection, it is worth it playing this one.

Slow paced, very short game. Has ambiance. Played twice.

Wished it had a second ending , the game was short but it did convey what it wants , though i still feel like the ending felt a bit rushed.
