Jennifer Wilde: Unlikely Revolutionaries

Jennifer WIlde is a disappointing game. If you're like me, the graphics are what will hook you, and they're great. But within the first few minutes of gameplay things start unraveling, and in my case I eventually hit a hard crash that made progression impossible, so here's the thumbs down. This game presents itself like a point-and-click adventure, but it doesn't really have the complexity of dialog or any inventory puzzles, so a comparison to Blackwell doesn't fly. It plays more like a minimalist VN where you walk from one location to the next and click through a handful of dialog options to unlock the next location. There is an obscure mechanic where you need to match pictures in your inventory to unlock more dialog options, but it's really unintuitive to determine which picture the developers deemed to be "incomplete" and thus requiring combination because they're all just black-and-white line drawings, so eventually you just have to click everything on everything to progress. In any case, VNs really lean a lot on having great dialog and this doesn't have it. I really enjoyed this game. It's a point and click game, however its definitely more on the Visual Novel side of things. Dialogue heavy, choices limited, that sort of thing. So if you don't like visual novels, you probably won't like this one. I enjoyed the art style, the simple puzzles and use of ghostly Oscar Wilde. The story was decent enough, I enjoyed it. Would love to see another like this in this style with a few more puzzles or interesting ways to use Oscar more.

While I did enjoy the game overall, there were quite a few things that held it back for me. The game is very short and can easily be finished in one sitting, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it does mean there isn’t as much development between Jenni and Oscar as I would’ve liked, especially given how fun their dynamic can be at times. One of my biggest issues was the complete lack of background music, all you hear most of the time is wind and Jenni's footsteps, which made the game feel oddly empty, and the sudden menu music when loading or exiting actually startled me a couple of times because of how silent everything else was. There’s also no voice acting at all, which was particularly disappointing since the trailer clearly features voices for Jenni and Oscar that suited them perfectly, making the silence in game feel like a downgrade. Visually, a lot of scenes are very static, with minimal animation, and in some moments it really undercuts the tension, especially the scene where Jenni is held at gunpoint alongside Helena and Oscar, yet all three look strangely unfazed, as if nothing serious is happening. A very enjoyable point and click mystery game. Loved the settings, loved the story, and loved interacting with Oscar Wilde!

Cute Little game. The art work is great, the wit is fun. Not much a game really, more like an interactive story book. Sad is doesn't have any voice over, I think that would take it up several levels. It's short and sweet, and if you can get it on sale, not a bad little time waster.
