About It's a Wrap!

It’s a Wrap! is a challenging 2D puzzle platformer set in 1980s Hollywood, where you play both the director and the star of action-packed, low-budget films.

All you wanted to do today was shoot a nice little popcorn movie, but everything is going wrong! As the director, you need to synchronize the actors and props that are messing up their timings. Then, as the movie’s star, you need to remember your script and play out the scene—without getting crushed by that giant boulder!

Be a Movie Director

Grab your megaphone and hop into the director’s chair to puzzle your way through the timing of props, actors, and special effects to make your scene work—and keep your star in one piece.

Be an Action Star

When you think you’ve got your scene set up correctly, roll the cameras and enjoy a variety of traditional 2D gameplay like platforming, car chases, and space battles where you control the movie star Johnny Rush in his most iconic roles.

A hundred colorful ways to “die”

Every time you fail, poor Johnny—who does not have a stunt double—will suffer a hilarious demise inspired by classic cartoons and adventure games. But don’t worry about long-lasting injuries, just rewind back to the beginning of the scene and try again!

Heaping spoonfuls of nostalgia

Each level is part of a movie with its own unique genre and look inspired by the biggest blockbusters of the 80s. See if you can spot all the references to your favorite fictional professors of archaeology, space wizards, and retired soldiers on the run from the law!

This is not how you do a puzzle-platformer. You can get the correct solution on the puzzle, do the platforming slightly wrong, and you will never know which of the two aspects you are screwing up. And it is very easy to screw up the platforming, the controls are not very good.

This game needed way more polish and testing.

TL;DR I 100%'d this "puzzle platformer" game. It has soul and a fun plot with adequate execution. It does neither puzzling nor platforming well. I would only recommend this to someone who enjoys tediously challenging games. It's obvious this game was made with passion and love, and I so wanted to like this game. To be fair, there are things to like! The art style, the puzzle controls/UI, and the delightfully cheesy plot and characters. Indeed, the game's premise/hook is very good as well. I think it's fair to say "It's a Wrap" delivers on it's promise; however, this is ultimately not truly a puzzle game and isn't a great platformer either. Since I'm a puzzle gamer foremost, I will focus on that aspect of the game (one minor platforming comment at the end of my review). The main focus of the puzzles were to generally find a gimmick of the level that's usually not apparent until you start playing with the scene controls. The developers make an effort to hint at these gimmicks in most levels, but I managed to still miss some during my time. Additionally, once you figure out the gimmick, there's the matter of actually making it happen which is less puzzle-y and more trail an…

A challenging and quite enjoyable platformer/puzzle game. The gameplay requires you to manipulate and time the various events of whichever scene you're filming with precise movements of your character in order to reach a marked objective. Lots of trial and error is required, especially towards the end of the game, where the number of variables on screen to consider can get overwhelming. Yet, whenever I found the right solution to the puzzle in front of me, I felt a sense of accomplishment. I believe this game deserves more attention.

Pros:

Creative puzzle platformer with Adobe Premier-style gameplay!
Funny cutscenes.
Cute art style.
There are secrets!
Cons:

Some of the puzzles feel like you're meant to brute force part of the solution, but at least you can always use hints to make the process easier. I brought eternal shame upon my family by using a total of 3-4 hints during my playthrough.
