Romancing SaGa 3™ (2019)

too old for me, Ill wait for the 3d remake

Much like Romancing Saga 2, this game is special in a lot of ways that some modern SaGa games have built off of (especially SaGa Frontier and its multiple scenarios). Alongside Live a Live, this is influential to a whole different franchise to SquEnix's catalogue that is no less groundbreaking in what RPGs can offer. It has a lot of new stuff (Commander Mode, Formation Spells replacing the Fusion Spells from 2) whilst having QoL features like replenishing LP costs for a lot less fear of permadeath. As well, though the characters from Romancing SaGa 2 had scenarios attached, I like that this entry was a lot more focused and we can see differences between the playable main characters that spans the whole playthrough. Especially with an exclusive minigame to one character, and one heavily connected to another character, there's ways to engage with the mechanics that can vastly differ from playthrough to playthrough. There's also a lot more out there options beyond just the four monster humanoids from 2, with a way more buckwild way to access them. Excited to see Destinies United polish the quality present here in 2027!

just had the whole world blown up by the final boss pretty mixed feelings so far it doesn't have unavoidable non-boss encounters and is non-linear in progression the first few hours were by far the worst. the random mobs are manageable if not easy, because they scale with your power, but then you encounter a single brick wall boss and have to back-track through the whole area. a lot of time i was just aimlessly hopping towns, probing if anything was unblocked or updated the game has a lot of obscured details in progression and mechanics, a guide is a necessity hard encounters in this game are very hard and AOE spam is just unfair to deal with, really. when you overcome said encounter, often there is no climax, just a fade to black screen and maybe a single dialogue bubble after, requiring another whole world sweep to find out what are the consequences if any i get that it's a very old jrpg with some new paint and things are just the way they are, with patience for that game's pretty alright

What a game. I really liked how the game rewarded exploration. Almost every dungeon tends to have something that's better than what you currently use or tends to have some utility. The final boss is an absolute bastard. You can't leave the final dungeon, and some categories of spells are a necessity, or you basically softlock yourself. Great game overall.
