About Tenderfoot Tactics

MODERN TACTICAL RPG, INSPIRED BY THE CLASSICS

A novel, deterministic combat system, with easy to grasp rules and astonishing depth.
No random miss chances. No damage ranges.
Manipulate the elements to turn the battlefield to your advantage, but beware the consequences, as nature is complex and fickle. Open chasms, raise mountains, boil lakes, drain rivers. Start fires you later regret.

VAST OPEN-WORLD EXPLORATION

Unearth ancient ruins, discover strange artefacts, and meet new friends, in a lush, painterly world. Explore the reaches of the archipelago by boat. Take to the skies as a bird to survey the landscape and plan the best route forward.

For a generation, the terrible Fog - one vast, voiceless, and cruel spirit - has been eating the once-thick forests of the mainland. Now, with nowhere left to call home, and granted magic by the friendly spirits of the archipelago, one small party of would-be adventurers sets out. Find a way to save the many goblin towns of the rocky coast, discover the truth of the Fog, and, if possible, put an end to it.

A note on playtime: Tenderfoot Tactics has a nonlinear structure and much of the game is exploratory, optional content. A speedrun could probably finish the game in a couple of hours or less, but average playtimes for people looking to see all the game has to offer probably average more in the 25-35 hour range for a full playthrough.

Tenderfoot Tactics was much better than I even expected, with very deep Final Fantasy Tactics-like combat involving a lot of environmental effects, including shifting elevation, fire, ice, and water. I had a lot of fun building moats to hide my ranged units behind. Class progression also works out a lot like FFT, and unlocking them all was my primary motivation to keep playing. It's very unique in that it has a large traversable overworld, but only fragments of maps available that you have to piece together and use triangulation to get around. It can definitely be frustrating, but also ultimately rewarding when you figure it out. Dying has little consequence other than sending you back to your last home base, so it's fun to just stumble around and see what you can find.

I really wanted to like this game, I really do, but I can't get past the difficulty of the game (and I only played on the base set difficulty). I'd prefer to either play as the fog (being ominous and creating monsters) or have the game for free to tinker with the party, but I won't hold my breath. Your game looks lovely, but the gameplay isn't very beginner friendly in my opinion.

This might just be me but I found the visuals to be fairly unclear, despite the obvious art style of choice. When in battle, I found party members to die too easily unless you play a certain way of sniping and baiting out enemies to gang up on. Other than this, I couldn't figure out what to do or where to go so I stopped playing.

This is my first open world game, and second grid-based/Turn-Based Tactics games after Jean of Arc for the PSP. The tutorial prepped me on the basics of combat, which was familiar enough. I was then let out into the world, and was quickly confused when the characters said to head west, as I lacked a compass. The map does not show where you are, there is no option for that, so I began to walk uphill to where I assumed west was. In my first encounter, I ended up retrying until I gained an enemy team composition and battlefield that was favorable, and narrowly winning. I soon learned that enemies are typically stronger than you, and that I should focus on scouting for items in the overworld that will give me XP faster than if I took on fights. I made my way by boat to a nearby area where several goblins discussed raids, got +400 XP for that, and saw that a crafting system existed but you had to be mindful of what you crafted. A class system soon became apparent, and that seems like the an area for creativity since you have 2 item slots per character, plus classes that can likely enable further skills, beyond than just the standard attack. I imagine this will be what allows you to …

An extremely beautiful game rippling with colorful fantasy and poetry of a certain fanatic timbre. Worth the price of admission for the landscape alone.
