Clock Tower: Rewind

The pop-up issue is STILL THERE! Absolutely unacceptable! And for a game that came out originally in 1995 with SNES mouse support, the mouse is sensitive as hell and unusable, I didn't see any options menu in game to change the sensitivity at all. As someone who 100% the PS1 First Fear Edition I am thoroughly disappointed.

Clock Tower: Rewind it's not just a classic retro, horror game, it's a great re-release of a classic that was never released overseas, done by the ever talented developers of WayForward who have released or remade games like River City girls and the Shantae series, but let’s talk about the story. Deep in the mountainous regions of Europe four young orphaned girls are adopted by a mysterious benefactor named Mr Barrows, one of the orphans, Jennifer is unsure about the strange manner that the locals of the village call the clock tower due to its giant clock tower. Unfortunately Jennifer’s instincts are going to be proven right as she will be face to face with the deadly slasher known as the Scissor-man. Now the young girl must try to escape and perhaps uncover the truth of this bizarre night of horrors in this deadly game of cat and mouse. Okay time for the likes, the gameplay is good it's a simple point and click horror game with a stalker mechanic, you go around picking up items and occasionally hiding from the stalker when they show up, nothing too complicated and pretty easy to understand. Thoroughly enjoyed this game. The new additions brought in by the Deluxe fan patch, including the restored cut content and fully reworked chase system add so much to the game both gameplay-wise and content-wise. Every time you play through it’s a new experience. Definitely recommend for those interested in point-and-click adventures or classic horror.

After playing this for nostalgia purposes, and getting all achievements, I have to say, it's not a bad port, but it definitely feels underwhelming. The translation is very much a downgrade, especially replacing "It happened in September" with "This is how it all started". The Animation style for the intro doesn't really fit, and neither do the new vocal songs in this port. Saving requires you to use the save state feature, meaning in order to keep track of your endings you HAVE to use it in order to save any progress you have made in the respective file. Another problem is the unlocks are decent, but I would've loved more artwork unlocks, or things of that nature, not just interviews and voice acted versions of the comics. The positives are the Bobby encounters are much more common in the rewind version, which makes the mansion far more terrifying than in the snes version, the ps1 content was added to the rewind version, and if you want to go old school, you can change to the original Snes game if you want. I'm going to preface my review with a bit of background on myself and my history with Clock Tower: In the early 2010s I got really heavy into watching lets plays of old games (something that never really left), and gaming history video essays (also something that never left). I first discovered Clock Tower through its spiritual successor game by CAPCOM (Haunting Ground), in about 2011, and I got hooked on it -- I wanted to know everything to know about the game, its history, how CAPCOM chose to make that game. And, as Haunting Ground is a successor title to Clock Tower, that's how I learned about this peculiar, vibrant game called Clock Tower, made for the Super Famicom. Reading all about Clock Tower, its PSX port, and the fact that it never truly made it stateside beyond a fan translation circling the internet was probably one of the most fascinating and enjoyable dives into a gaming series I've ever done.
