Subversive Memories

Combining gripping survival horror gameplay with a history lesson and maybe a little political messaging is a tightrope dance most devs would - if at all - only dare shivering and on tippy-toes. Southward Studio sees that tightrope, takes a running jump onto it and does flic-flacs and splits on it without even so much as a stumble. Subversive Memories is that tightrope. But first, and why you probably are reading this in the first place, is Subversive Memories a good survival horror? Yes. So much yes. The story, even ignoring its historical and political depth, is gripping, the mechanics intriguing, the puzzles fun and challenging and the combat scary but satisfying. The game doesn't overstay its welcome, being perfectly paced along its maybe 6 hour runtime, a duration I prefer for my horror games. Keep it tight. Sure you will think of Resident Evil here, Silent Hill there and, given the combat, a little Alan Wake everywhere, but Subversive Memories is very much its own game. You put eggs in omelettes and zabaione, that doesn't make a zabaione an omelette. This was a fantastic game with a very well written story. The combat while simple works for what it tries to convey. It is sort of a survival horror and does feel creepy, the atmosphere is great but I do wish combat was expanded upon in some points or there was another boss fight or two the explored the light mechanic a bit but none the less I enjoyed my playthrough of the game!

Submersive Memories is an intriguing little survival-horror game with incredibly tight pacing. The game takes place during the Brazilian Revolution in the 20th century. It effectively blends the historical setting with horror elements. While the presentation is limited, I was completely hooked on the story and mystery. Combat is only a small part of the experience; the gameplay is more focused on clever and at times quite tricky puzzles. I give a strong recommendation for people looking to fill an evening with a unique horror experience.

It opens with the standard "this is a work of fiction warning", yet immediately tells you "this is not a work of fiction" upon starting a new game. It's pretty clear that, supernatural elements aside, the latter warning is the one the devs really meant. Although the events of Subversive Memories did not actually happen, one character is very obviously based on a real person whose disappearance greatly contributed to Brazil's return to democracy, and you're clearly meant to come away from this having learned something about a period that is rarely discussed even in Brazil. In terms of gameplay, Subversive Memories hews very closely to classics like Resident Evil 2. It even opens with a similar roadside scene leading into the game's main level, and the puzzle style within will be equally familiar.
