BLACKTAIL

I do not recommend the game If you have any sort of compromised hands but I did enjoy it fully so I'm giving it a positive review but i wanted to put this 1st. I liked this game but it hurt to play for one reason You only have a bow and it used Bow controls and on my older hands that was not fun IF you don't need to worry about that then Go ahead. As it was a fun game with plenty to do combat wasn't easy but wasn't mind numbing hard either. I was able to get A lot of "alls" like all skills all side quests in one playthrough which is always a Plus in my book for a single player game. It rewards exploring, yea overall good game.

Neutral review = story, visuals, vibe, lore, characters are positives, gameplay has some problems, as an archery game I have troubles with it being mostly a random stick and feather gathering game to insta craft arrows which I insta spam and loose when I get overwhelmed by tiny kobold -esque mons. Start was strong and invested, after 2 hours I already had to leave it be. I can recommend it as start is strong and can influence non slavic people to start myth explorations, but I cant recommend it for a full price

Blacktail is a gigantic surprise to me and not at all what I was expecting when I started. While I expected an action game with interesting mechanics and a cliché story, what I got was the opposite, a phenomenal setting/story and mediocre action. The star of Blacktail is the amazing Slavic folklore setting. It's incredible! I was completely immersed. I read almost everything available, from Almanac entries to item descriptions and even quest descriptions. There is just so much to unpack and learn from this strange folklore. Talking about strange, the story starts with a child called Yaga being hunted by the peasants that think she's a witch after her sister and some kids from the village vanish. During the pursuit she stumbles upon THE HUT™. Meanwhile, some sort of corruption called "The Roots" gets unleashed on the land by The Hut, and things unfold in an interesting way. I don't want to spoil anything else. It's a good story worthy of paying attention. Most of the dialogue revolves around Yaga (MC) and "The Voice," which is a mysterious voice that Yaga speaks with and at first has no real explanation. The writing, characters, voice acting, and weird fairy-tale story kept me going for about 21 hours, but eventually I realized I was only playing to see where the story went. The combat feels slow and clunky, several bosses felt badly balanced enough that cheesing them was easier than fighting them properly, the graphics are strangely dated in places, and some of the later quests just felt grindy enough that I couldn't be bothered. There could be a much better game here, and I genuinely like what they were trying to do with the morality system and story, but the actual gameplay never did it for me.
