Assassin's Creed® Odyssey

♥♥♥♥ man. This game is beautiful. The world, the sailing, and the music are all wonderful. However, this game is just a bunch of ♥♥♥♥♥♥ mind-numbing content dressed up in an pretty package. Voice acting is great but the dialogue can be awkward and stiff at times due to the poor writing choices. It's such a shame because they really got the bones to make a great game but failed on world building/lore and the writing. Even the main story quests are bogged down by meaningless kill/fetch quests that offer no real insight into any of the characters or the world. This totally messes with the pacing of the game. Side quests and characters do not add any interest to the game. I can only recommend this game if you just want explore and experience Ubisoft's presentation of ancient Greece just for the visuals alone. Otherwise the gameplay and world building leave a lot to be desired.

All right, so I played the game and the DLCs and there are a lot of positive reviews, I guess, so I'm going to give it a negative one in the spirit of balance. There is a good game with very pretty environments here, but buried in a lot of repetitive busywork and bad writing. I just finished Legacy of the First Blade and boy people aren't lying when they complain that the writing there is just godawful. None of the choices you make in the base game or the DLCs, or even plot threads, connect with each other and it drives me crazy. I think it's because different studios developed different things and didn't communicate with each other? There are so many plot holes and logical inconsistencies. This entire thing needed to be reduced in scope by at least 30% and it would have been a huge improvement, because they would have been able to keep track of the story elements more easily and the characters would have had time to develop more. AC Odyssey gameplay is the equivalent of gaming junk food, just running around from place to place with story beats that are so bland and hard to remember that you could probably just mash through all the dialogue and be perfectly fine. Not functioning. Game goes to white infinite loading screen after going "into" the animus for the first time. Fullscreen, windowed, Vsync, high graphics, low graphics, doesn't matter. Avoid.
