TLDR: This is a functional shell with some neat concepts but very little polish and a lot of places where you wonder why there isn't more. I'm really surprised this left early access, though I guess it's been so long it had to. Don't get me wrong, this is a functional game. Ish. I don't even mind the lighter more gamified vibe so much, there's other games if you want stricter historical accuracy. It has some good concepts, like multipart buildings, upgrade lines through adding parts and villagers making their own houses & paths. But all of it feels unfinished. Why do only some buildings have upgrade paths? My brewery has only 1 worker slot and no upgrades?? For that matter, why is so much of the game not multiparts? They're clearly the best part of building. The non player controlled parts of the game don't respect your time. The villager-built houses concept is not bad in principle but they keep breaking. It's very unclear how much space they need for one house, and they often fail to upgrade because the footprint changed or you built them a fence. And when they downgrade, the resources are gone. 15 out of 10! The Ultimate Antidote to City-Building Grid Spam. In a genre often dominated by rigid grid systems and hyper-optimized block layouts, Foundation stands out as a breath of fresh, medieval air. It is a city builder that trades strict geometric confinement for beautiful, organic growth. After spending over 250 hours in game, the core loop remains so much fun. The only desire is to immediately start yet another settlement. At first glance, Foundation captivates with its gorgeous graphic aesthetics and a remarkably chill, atmospheric soundtrack that sets a perfectly relaxed tone. However, beneath its charming, stylized exterior lies an economy of incredible depth. The game is deceptively simple to pick up, yet mastering its resource management and trade systems provides a deeply satisfying mechanical challenge. Tinkering with production chains and managing the intricacies of the global trading system feels rewarding without ever becoming tedious. This is one of the most relaxing games I've come across. The soundtrack is peaceful, the graphics are beautiful, and being able to watch everything grow in organically is serene. 10/10
