70s-style Robot Anime Geppy-X

The very definition of "style over substance" of a video game, BUT, its style is really good and there's still fun to be had in here despite the shortcomings. [h1]Get up son, you'll miss out on your favorite cartoon before the school![/h1] You're on a title screen, you start a new game, see a clock that ticks to 7:00AM and then it begins, anime intro starts playing. Right off the bat the vibes are incredible and this is the strongest point of the game, it really "MAKES ME FEEL" like I am watching a TV show, especially when they put stage mid point commercials to advertise shampoos or made up movies and finish stages with credits and "in the next episode" parts. If you like this kind of thing, you are going to love this game. Unfortunately not all of it is perfect since a lot of the cutscenes are static images where sometimes they move their mouths, but at least the writing is still fun. [b]70s-style Robot Anime Geppy-X[/b] is one of the most interesting preservation releases I have played in years. Originally released only in Japan for the PlayStation in 1999, Geppy-X presents itself less like a conventional shooter and more like an entire lost super-robot television series. Every stage is framed as another episode, complete with opening and ending themes, eyecatches, character scenes, fake commercials, and next-episode previews. That presentation is the real star. The shooting underneath it is solid rather than exceptional. You can switch between three robot forms in real time, with X1 providing balanced firepower, X2 emphasizing speed, and X3 rewarding aggressive close-range attacks. Charged shots, transformation invincibility, and several inventive bosses give the combat enough identity to stay engaging, but awkward turning, recovery after attacks, and some overly durable enemies keep it from reaching the same level as the presentation surrounding it. What a great experience! I had never heard of this game until this remaster was released. I am so glad that I picked this up. As a 50 something fan of classic anime, giant robots, and video games, this was a match made in heaven. The shooting is fine, as stated in other reviews. However, the big draw of this release is the love and care that went into everything around the game. The soundtrack, voice work, animated scenes, commercials for products related to the anime, etc etc. I don't think i stopped smiling the entire time I was playing this. An easy recommend for aging gamers like myself!

Truly an anime game. It has 2 OPS and EDS + in-world ads in between the levels. The amount of love that went into this game even before its translation is amazing. More people should watch older anime so they can appreciate this game even more. Appreciate the game having limited lives at first and then giving you infinite lives upon repeated playthroughs.
