Fight as a space gunner and blast robots back to infinity! Our unlikely heroes will have to hone their skills and build-up their arsenal in preparation to destroy diverse robot armies. Fun game, wonderful looking too, slightly frustrating at times but so are many games.
While it boasts some fun movement and occasionally breaks the pacing up with some puzzles, Akimbot is sadly a very messy title and not what I expected being sold on the "Indie Ratchet & Clank" premise. The game's Clank counterpart is a pretty annoying Numbuh 2 sounding fella who I almost wanted to mute the game several times whenever he was yapping. The game that sells itself as an indie R&C is... not really super R&C styled in gameplay at all. It has four guns + a special weapon, the latter being where you spend your bolt equivalent to upgrade. I feel pretty bummed, as I expected the four weapons would level and everything, but this was not the case. Akimbot really seems to be lacking in sauce, some real hook to its gameplay aside from the pretty satisfying movement. Level design was passable, though some come across as excessively padded, like the level where you meet The Processor. It's also paired with gameplay switches that, while some provide fun, can also drag. The spaceship sections play like those in Tools of Destruction and do provide some simple, but satisfying shooting while you fly about. But the game sorely underutilizes Shipset in some spots.
