A Card Game KING review
In its current iteration Alchemy Deck is a bit too simplistic but the foundations are there to build something more exciting out of it. As it stands, the gameplay revolves around gathering ingredients and combining them together into a potion to sell to patrons. Unfortunately, the combination part is fairly straightforward - just pick two ingredients that match the requested category from the order add water and sell the potion. Rinse and repeat with the only difference that over time more ingredients and locations are added to the mix. There are a few things can obstruct this process such as arsonists, rodents, bandits cards that appear and destroy stuff on your board. This does add some variety, but to me it was a frustrating one as dealing with them requires fast reflexes, something I'm not really keen on being tested on in a game that's mostly about planning and resource management. The game could also benefit from streamlining some of the processes. Selling potions feels fiddly and the board space feels claustrophobic (doesn't help that water card just scatter on the table). Having the fast forward option in the same click cycle as pause a…6 found this helpful
I'm enjoying this game greatly. Something like Cultist Simulator crossed with Book of Hours, or perhaps Stacklands crossed with Strange Horticulture is fairer, since this game doesn't require you to fail as part of the mechanic. My only gripe really is the cards are very glitchy (it IS in early access) and the words and numbers often partially or completely disappear so I'm guessing. The general mechanisms of the game are lovely and I really enjoy them, far more than I enjoyed the Potion whatsit game, but I look forward (somewhat) impatiently to a day when we're out of testing mode and into smooth sailing. In terms of improvements I'd really love it if we could have some kind of friendly hints around the values on the cards (e.g., why minuses when added can equal a plus value?) and suchlike things.1 found this helpful
While some amount of randomness is to be expected in this kind of game, the combination of random orders asking for random values that require potions to be made with random resources from a random area means that rather than strategically approaching potion making, you're just doing whatever. You're not making choices, but just doing whatever comes up and facing consequences or rewards based on luck of the draw. And at that point you might as well play solitaire, at least that doesn't come with a time limit.1 found this helpful
A fun and promising card game. I m excited for the full release, definitely worth giving a try
It has promise but there came a point where it wouldn't let me sell my potions or make anything other then health potions for some reason, and the game doesn't give you any direction as far as how the ingredients interact with each other. All in all I hope progress is made to the game but as of now it is verging unplayable
Try not to get bankrupt challenge
Concept is cool but execution is lacking.
