Aphelion

I am normally very fine with mediocre games but this one is a disaster. It has great visuals and many good views but the whole game feels like a chore and I don't think I'll be able to finish the last chapter. If you can survive past the enormous jankiness that the introduction presents, you might end up playing the whole game. I read many times this was a "parkour" game. There is no parkour (which is not a bad thing). In fact when I started the game, seeing how bad the animations were, I could not believe it was going to be based on parkour. This is more like a walking simulator in 3rd person, with some running sequences. The climbing is the oldest kind of climbing you can imagine (think Tomb Raider 2). The main characters seem to be in a competition for which will be disliked more. Bland story and exploration on rails (which is not necessarily always a bad thing), not a good experience overall.

Aphelion is a game by Don’t Nod. It is a bold direction and a compelling narrative for space exploration and developing relationships between the two protagonists. I spent a few days debating whether I write a recommendation for this game and I have concluded that the gaie is a net positive recommendation. Despite all that, I have reservations regarding the lack of consistent gameplay and janky controls, but does best on brand with Don’t Nod – a compelling narrative. Set on Planet 9 Persophone, the main character crash alnd and has to find her frind, wh ile dealing with the natural creatures in hunting mode. As usual with Don’t Nod fare, Aphelion plays to their strengths: Story, world building, and graphics. The story is the perhaps the best part, as Ariane has a compelling goal to achieve: saving her crewiate and explore the world for humanity’s hopes. Her craft crash lands on the planet and has to find thei and report back to mission Control on Earth. She does so. As usual, the graphics and world building are serene and beautiful. I had high hopes for this game. Graphics are good but the story is so slow and there are way too many cut scenes. Physical movement of the player is very poor, like going back 30 years.

Aphelion is exactly the kind of game I wish the industry would make more often. In a market saturated with endless live-service releases, multiplayer extraction shooter remakes of singleplayer games (MARATHON), and action games that mistake spectacle and/or tedium for substance, this is a confident, narrative-driven hard science fiction adventure that trusts its world, its characters, and its players. If you enjoyed games like The Invincible or the Deliver Us series, *Aphelion* deserves a place near the top of your wishlist. One of the first things that stood out to me was the game's exceptional accessibility. Whether you're here for the challenge of surviving an unforgiving alien environment or simply want to experience the story, there are enough options to tailor the experience to your preferences. It's refreshing to see accessibility treated as a way to invite more people into the experience rather than compromise the developer's vision. The story is good but unfortunately the game is full of bugs and glitches and the main difficulty if the game play is to bypass them. Some more attention to these details would improve drastically the game experience.
